vintage Outlaws photos

From 1963 to 1967, American photographer Danny Lyon, lived with the Chicago chapter of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. He published a book in 1968 called The Bikeriders based on the material he gathered during those four years. It is currently out of print, but I've found 30 photos which you can enjoy now...

type something here, some day.

ah, very cool link. many thx!

first pic, and pic of "renegade's funeral" sort of coalesce the era for me. am pushing 61, and remember an older guy in high school that rode a bobbed sporty. was told the cops watched him always, was bounced out of school from time to time, real trouble. he showed me a softball-sized wound on his calf once, he'd fallen off his bike and couldn't get the friggin' thing off him in time. just laid there and sizzled. my parents called him a "greaseball" because of his slicked-back hair, and considered him two steps below a dope fiend. forbidden to talk to him of course. ha! fuck that. societal norms and expectations were a little "tight" up here in vt, but i loved the rebellion that flowed from him. the "fast" girls from montpelier loved him, lucky bastid.

i thought he was very cool.

he carried a switchblade and had a looped chain on his back pockets, a good substitute for brass knucks (outlawed). he didn't appear to give a f*ck about anything. i always felt guys of this period preferred fists and knives (the term was getting wet) to pistols. fighting in tight like that is in your face, personal, smelly, animalistic, base. hand guns were almost cheating.

"buckle"

thanks.

sister responded to my query last night and she remembers him. his name is "buckle" jackman, and still is in central vt. funny, some folks have names that meld with their persona. jack kerouak also comes to mind. ernest hemingway, not so much.
