While we're talking of Korean War jet aces, I've just been made aware that Dolph Overton died yesterday.

He got shafted by the brass and left the service shortly after his second tour in Korea.

His story reminds me of the Vietnam fighter/bomber commander, COL Broughton of Thud Ridge fame.

RIP

Wow...that thing belongs in the Ugly Airplane Hall of Fame... Hard to believe that came from Gulfstream who built/builds some of the most beautiful aircraft.

The Hustler 400 the predecessor of the "ugly" Hustler 500, with a single PT6 turbo-prop, turned out to be more promising than the jet/turbo-prop combo of the 500. Back when both of these models were developed single engine turbines were not approved for instrument condition passenger commercial flights, hence the dual engine set-up. Some years ago single turbine passenger commercial flights were approved, at least in the USA. Just before that occurred other plane makers stepped up with a several single turbine aircraft, notably the TBM 700, and most especially the very successful Pilatus PC-12. Which while not quite at the performance level of the "Hustler 500" (what a name) is a superb aircraft and now has sold/built around 1000 of them at around $3.5 million each. (BTW Pilatus is not a US company). It is now rumored that Beechcraft will now make a new aircraft very much like the Pilatus PC-12 - close to 20 years later..
