What is a maxi-scoot?

There was a recent post on our local scooter group's meet-up page asking if it was "technically a maxi-scoot" club because many of the rides were pegged at 125cc or above.

I've seen several semi-definitions of maxi-scoot.

The first is used by many to refer to any scooter of 400cc or larger though these folks might include the BV 350 in that category because of its performance capabilities.

The other refers to body style, aka Burgman, Silverwing, Honda PCX, Kymco Xciting, Piaggio X and MP3 series regardless of engine size as opposed to the classic upright style of a Vespa, Sports City, Kymco People.

The third use I've seen is a combination of one and two with the more Asian foot forward body style and marked as a 400 or higher.

I tend towards the second definition based on body style though I think of the Honda PCX as a mini-maxi so perhaps that makes me use the third definition after all.

So what is your definition?

A scooter that can ride ANY road maintaining at least the speed limit, including the highways.

To me, all of those things have something to do with it, but I have a hard time coming up with an absolute definition. The Silverwing, both Burgs, the Majesty, and the BMW are definitely maxi scooters. The BV models, Honda Reflex, Honda Helix, and a few more fall in between. They are loooonng like a maxi, but don't have the displacement. They can be ridden on the freeway, but only at nearly full throttle. Bikes like the SportCity 250, SYM HD200, and other large wheeled scooters are still different from a traditional scoot, like a Vespa LX150, Buddy, Stella, any vintage Vespa, Vino 125, Zuma 125, etc. I call 50cc scooters "mini scoots". And then there is the Honda PCX150. One of a kind. Styled like a maxi scoot, but to small to be one. Can be ridden on some freeways but not others. The former Elite 110 was also in this category I guess. A long stretched out design, but small displacement.

To me the best scooter in the world would probably be the Vespa GTS300 Super. It looks like a traditional scooter, a little bigger but still in proper scale, and fully highway capable. And it is still about the same price as a Majesty (depending on what the dealer feels like adding on to the price)


Used to be the definition of a scooter was simple and obvious. Today about the only differences between a scooter and a motorcycle are where the gas tank and engine are, and a scooter has to be at least partly a step through.

It seems the general consensus is 300cc + is a Maxi, but YMMV.

That's what the wifester is really looking at when she's finally ready to give up her 400 Burgman. She can put all of the the 300's on the center stand like they were paper weights. A test drive is needed...

This is not a Maxi scoot, But will cruise 60mph.

BVs range from 250 to 500cc. I can and have cruised for hours at a time going 90mph on my BV 500 and not be WOT. The BV 250 is more like our Sports City which had no problems hitting the rev limiter on I-40 on my recent ride from California to Texas - at 92 indicated or 88 GPS. Granted heavy cross winds will take their toll on it maxing it out WOT around 70. I've not ridden a BV 350 but from the folks I know who ride them have had no problems even 2 up on the freeways in So. Calif. and Texas with it.

I guess I'm closer to MODNROD except that it isn't but the butt (the Vespa GTS has a fat ass but I don't consider it a maxi) and front faring with the more cruiser riding position is to me what makes a maxi.

I would agree with this for what is currently in production but I would consider the 250cc Honda Helix the 1st Maxi-Scooter

The Helix was definitely different, and I remember all the commotion they caused when they first came out. The magazines didn't know what to make of it. It is definitely styled like a maxi, but a little small. I guess it sits right on the line. Interesting that no one else came out with anything like it for a long time.

But then, what would you call an MP3?

The Helix historically would be the first freeway capable scooter. Although small by today's standards it was innovative, 244 cc, two up seating, inclosed storage, trip meter, instrumentation, 14" longer wheel base, feet forward riding position. Lower seat Hieght. 20 years of production. Some say it is the first maxi scooter. Today it would be solidly midrange.
