Should I buy a 96 Beta 250 Techno?

Hey guys! I am really thinking about buying a 1996 Beta 250 Techno, but not sure. It's a 17 year old bike after all! It will be my first trails bike and it's going for a good price, $2000. It looks in good condition.

Is buying a 17 year old bike a bad idea? Is there anything I should look out for on this bike?

Sure looks mighty clean. I 'd say that's a fair price. Offer $1500.00 and go up from there.

Besides being the ugliest Beta ever, they were great bikes! Looks like very low hours as in none.

I started Trials on my 96 Techno last year. I have put a ton of hours on the bike with no issues. The only parts I have replace is the fan and water pump impeller. Both part were Rev3 parts that fit the Techno. It's the same engine and carb the newer Rev3 uses. Biggest difference is the Techno is heavier in the front than the newer bikes. Also, the rear brake is not too great on the Techno. With some work the brake can be setup to work good enough. Beta has an issue with corrosion due to magnesium used in the cases. From what I had read the Techno used aluminum cases...so.. that's not an issue.

I like trials so much I bought a Rev3 for when I wear out the Techno. But, the Techno keeps going and going so I still ride it and let the Rev3 sit.

I paid $1,000 for mine. Think I could get $1,500 for it. $2,000 would be too much here in CA.

Personally I always liked those colors together.

I had a VERY clean `95 techno in febuary 1996. I had sold a new `96 to a friend. By march we traded bikes even. He had his beautiful red beta, and I the current (but ugly) bike!

Is there anything I can do to improve the back brake? Can I replace it with another part? Whats the weakest link? Master, slave cylinders? Pads? Disk?

The brake just was locked, dragged or nothing. All the beats rears sucked until the rev 3 came out.The only thing that actually went bad was there was some kind of rubber damber on the mounting bolts that wore out. I imagine by now that the rebuild kit has been unavailable for years.

If you get the linkage properly adjusted the rear brake works OK. I just have to move my foot forward and really stand on it on steep stuff. Had it quit working on a ride. It was just a matter of adjusting the linkage a few turns and it was fixed.

If you buy the bike and can't get it to lock the rear wheel then the brake needs some work.
