speed wobble

Hi MM riders. I've got a problem with the front suspension. When I accellerate up to about 100 mph (only on German Autobahn of course ) the front starts to wobble. Sort of a headshake. Not violent and if I slow down it goes away, but still it's quite annoying.

That is with:
- front and rear highest setting
- oil 7.5W
- damping in and out oem settings front and rear
- tires Michelin Streetpilot 3, different pressures tested

Also tried:
- front and rear highest setting
- damping in and out GSMarc's settings front and rear
> no change

- front and rear highest setting
- damping in and out front on the toughest setting
> somewhat better but not ideal

- front height middle setting
- damping in and out oem settings front and rear
> somewhat better but not ideal

Am I looking in the wrong place perhaps? Can it be caused by something differenent like wheel balance, wheel bearings, wind screen (Isotta fitted), global warming, bad karma, ...

Are you the original owner? Perhaps your MM was in an accident where the bike may have sustained minor front end damage(?)
I have the Isletta screen as well and have never experienced any instability, even over 100

No I bought it last year with about 20k on.

But there are no signs of frame damage or such.

Migsel, to rule out some possibilities, I guess that you don't ride with a loose jacket and keep your handle bars with a strong grip.:-)
May be it is possible to ride the bike of gsmarc and feel the differences and set your bike accordingly.
Are your tires okay and what pressure do you use?

I do regular speeds above 160kmh without a moving front, so it is possible off course. Mine findings are that lowering the front will make the bike generally more unstable at speed.
All though a lot of riders are complaining about the front suspension, setting it to standard setting should by it self not cause your complaints. So if the front fork is okay, that can be ruled out.

Remove your windshield and ride without.

I think that balancing your wheels if necessary, can be ruled out as cause of the problem, because I did ride with and with out balanced wheels without a problem.

Because you already did a lot and if the bike is in good condition, do things step by step, removing the wind shield and wear a leather jacket can be done at the same time :-) but regarding the changes to the suspension, one at a time and write things down and not more than two or three clicks a time.

Mine guess is that the pressure of the pr3 will make a lot of difference.

I have the same thing happen at around 105mph, if I let off slightly it goes away. A few friends who have been behind me when it occurs, tell me they see my rear tire weaving side to side. I have had the suspension set by a professional suspension tuner and it handles fantastic up to that speed. I am 6'6" and I like the bike set up at it's max height, so I have the fork tubes dropped completely flush with the top triples. The effect of this adjustment should be to slow the steering down and make it more stable, but it doesn't help at that speed. I've become used to gripping with my knees more and relaxing my hold on the grips a bit when it happens, but I still cant get much faster than that without it becoming more pronounced. I'm religious about the condition of my tires and check the tire pressure before every ride. I run 32 F+R for aggressive riding and 32F and 36R for just cruising around. It does the same thing with either pressure setting. I have the Isotta screen as well as GS hand guards and I also have a Scotts steering damper mounted. Since there are only a few places where I ride at that speed and most of the time I ride a bit slower, I just deal with it by sprinting through the twistys and keeping ahead of my friends on their liter bikes. ;-)

Hmm, interesting.

I am going to have a closer look at:
- tires: pressure and balance
- wheel bearings (could be a bit worn)
- head stock bearings (are almost new but may need adjusting)

I bought my MM new and had the same effect. I wanted to sell it back immediately, was horrible.

I also bought a steering damper from Scoot, was a little better but...

Finally, I found the cause :
I decreased the preload of the rear yellow spring and the bike became very stable, no more wobble during acceleration

I unmounted the steering damper and put it on the HP2E

Even with the RapidBike setting wich gives far more accelerations, no more wobbles, a real pleasure

I remember setting the rear spring with more pre load and having more or less the same effect, setting it back to standard static sag was the cure.

Today I have removed the screen and the handguards and it was much better already.

I'll try the spring preload tip as well, to see what that does.

Wobble

I fitted a Scotts damper some time ago and it seemed to help... might have to fiddle with the preload now!

Dude, Mine has the screen and handguards - DON'T have a steering stabilizer (why?), and I have NEVER experienced ANY kind of wobble or high speed head shake - EVER.
You might want to get yor bike checked out by a professional, there is some shit wrong...just sayin'

On another note, I washed my bike today. Although I'm still two weeks out, I'm really excited for my trip.


Edit: Heres a couple pics from a "test" ride a couple weeks ago. I rode up to Mt Charleston, near Las Vegas. I rode up there because not only was I testing the way my bike would handle, but how well my Klim Latitude gear would work. Ive never ridden two up before, so the extra weight (about 40 lbs, total) made the bike feel a little interesting. The temps in the valley were about 90 and the temps up on Charley were around 50. Im VERY happy that I bought my Klim gear. Its very comfortable in both temps (with openings closed and open). Anyways, heres the goods!

My bit for what it's worth: Had exactly the same problem from new with stock settings and lowest height -- no damper and no screen.

Just backing the damping off front and back 4 clicks improved the ride and got rid of the head shaking.
