I have over 60K miles on the F650GS, in the background and all but about 500 were ridden right here in AR. Hoping to hit some twisties, here in a few weeks.

Break in?

How did you guys "break in" your engine? Just picked up a 2013 R and I've been wondering about this. Everywhere I look I see contradicting statements.

I feel like answers to this question tend to be fairly similar to the "which oil is best" debate. You're likely to get a ton of different answers.

I bought mine with 1k miles on the clock so the previous owner had to deal with the break in period.

Don't do a full motoman break in, but I run it relatively hard maybe 3/4 of the tach or so and constantly vary the RPM and gear.

The hell with that 5000 RPM crap.

I was told to do that by my dealer (who would have to deal with the warranty) and the guys at markbuilt agreed.

You'll just get more contradictory answers. I've been going by the book/tank up to 300 miles. I have been riding curvy country roads mostly and staying off the freeways, so it wasn't hard.

Called my dealer to figure out when to schedule my 500 mile service (busy in NY this time of year) and he said I should definitely let it rip at this point and that the first service should be closer to 600 rather than 500 miles.

My dealer basically did mine free. I did all of the wrench work and then hauled it in so they could read the ECM real fast.

In and out in 25 minutes, free of charge.

Bump...need some action here on this thread

So I made the grave error of throwing a leg over a STR and going for a Demo ride at last weekends Baxter Cycle open house. I got off of it after the ride and just shook my head and mumbled "Dammit." I REALLY liked it for the short time I was on it (unfortunately escorted ride). I just got back from NW Arkansas after putting 1900 miles on my '03 SV650S down there. The Street was definitely more comfortable as far as bar placement goes. Suspension was more comfy as well, though that is probably my fault on the SV...its sprung for track days and hard riding.

Something about the totally stripped, lightweight, purposeful look and the engine really got to me. I really don't see that it is all that better than the SV on paper. Similar torque, only the higher rev limit gives it a HP advantage. I have the suspension on the SV dialed in for quicker turn in I usually don't do much more than 85-90 when attacking the twisties. No hammering the straights and try to keep the corner speed up high and not clamp down hard on the brakes (The Pace, if you are familiar with the term).

So anyway, I am really trying to decide if my experience was just the excitement and obsession of a new bike, or if there really is something about the Street that makes it a better experience than the SV650S. Anyone make the switch and have a similar riding style to mine? Keep in mind that I would use it for sport touring, nearest twisties are 400 miles away and necessitate a long weekend and a medium tail pack. After owning one for a while, do you still feel the change was significant? I have seen so many reports of folks wishing they had never sold an SV and claiming it was one of the best bikes they ever had. I defiantly have a bond with mine. Just really hard to justify another street bike in the garage unless it has something unique in its capabilities.

Basically it seems like, The Street R has sexiness and power over the SV and maybe a better chassis/suspension. Also, the around town comfort is certainly higher on the Street. Never really could get my SVS to have a comfy bar position.

Has anyone seen any deals on a '13 STR? It seems like most dealers just advertise MSRP I think i saw one report of a '13 STR going for $9400 on here in another thread.
