What gear are you wearing when riding pavement to your favorite off-road spot?

Simple question, if you have to ride pavement (highway) to your off-roading spot what do you wear? Do you wear street gear, then change? Only wear MX gear or a mix?

Today I did my first off-road ride at Thomaston Dam in CT. Since I also have a street bike I have some road gear.

Street Gear:
  • Shoei RF-1000 helmet
  • Cortech Latigo jacket (leather w/built in shoulder/elbow/back armor)
  • Dainese D6 Kevlar jeans
  • Held Air Stream gloves

MX Gear:
  • AFX FX-39 helmet
  • Alpinestars Techstar jersey/pants/gloves
  • Gaerne SG-10 boots
  • old lacrosse pads (chest/elbow)

On the ride up (40 minutes, ALL highway, each way) I wore:
  • AFX FX-39 Helmet
  • Cortech Latigo Jacket
  • Alpinestars Techstar Pants
  • Held Air Stream Gloves

then I changed into:
  • Alpinestars Techstar Jersey/Gloves
  • lacrosse elbow pads

basically it wasn't too bad hauling all that stuff up (in a backpack), but more so when riding off-road it really sucked...

Thoughts?

I've been looking at the axo stone or alpinestars venture. can wear body protector, elbow pads etc, vented jersey and jacket. The arms and collar zip off so they can be stowed for max ventilation. Wear street gloves and switch to dirt when on the dirt. I have pretty good confidence in my klim dakars on pavement with my leatt dual axis knee gaurds and padded shorts underneath. I figure thats pretty streetable dirt gear and you dont have to stow much. with a leatt adv suit or rockgarden or similar you might could get away with no jersey. The axo also has a bladder pocket, so it basically turns into a camelvest off road.

- Dualsport helmet.
- Ventilated mesh or leather shorty gloves with knuckle armor.
- Acerbis Cosmo jacket or similar.
- Armored undershorts.
- Knee/shin armor.
- Tourmaster Flex pants with armor removed.
- Coolmax hi-viz t-shirt.
- Maybe a hi-viz all-season jacket with armor removed, depending on weather.
- ATV boots.

This does it all - street, dirt and touring.

G-Midland Boots
Alpinestars Scheme gloves (Kevlar palms but good for off road)
Vanson Vent max 4 (1000 denier) under AXO enduro jacket with zip off sleeves.
Klim Mojave pants when over 80 and dry, Traverse pants (or maybe new Overlands) for wet and colder weather
AFX FX-39

Can add layers for warmth but I'm in San Diego.

I just wear my dirt gear, when I still had it. A* Tech 6 boots, Klim Baja or Chinook pants, 661 pressure suit, MX jersey, HJC dirt or Shoei Hornet DS helmet with Fox Bomber gloves and goggles and ear plugs.

For a longer traveling type DS trip I'd probably wear a more street oriented jacket (now, a Klim traverse, then a Rev'it Air) and my dirt pants. In fact, that's what I wore on the TAT in August 2009 and loved it, to date its the gear that worked best on a trip.

I wear Hein Gericke gloves, riding jeans, knee pads, and an ICON TiMax I jacket. When I go offroad I add the chest protector and elbow pads. If it's hot (it's always hot uhg...) I trade the jacket for my No Fear PureMX jersey. I prefer the jacket, Especially if im planning riding hard. it keeps sand out of my skin :) I do need to get some MX gloves, the Gerickes give me the "grogies" in my hands.

If you ain't dropping the bike, you're not doing it right

The same gear I ride off road. No need to have the panniers on or extras when you are riding for the day.
