Question Need advice on 1980 Suzuki GS450E

Hey guys,

I have the opportunity to purchase a relatively cheap bike here in Perth. It's a 1980 Suzuki GS450E. You can see it listed here:

It looks like this:

The owner states that the right cylinder has 90psi compression and the left cylinder has 110psi compression.

What should the normal compression be in the cylinders? How far gone is this bike if it's reading 110psi and 90psi in it's left and right cylinders respectively?

I'm looking for advice on the engine compression test readings only, not the sale price, the fact that it's old as hell, etc. Cheap, running, registered bikes above 50cc are hard to come by here in West Australia. If I was at home in the states, I wouldn't worry if it needed a ring job, as I'd have the ability to do it there. However, I don't have the tools to work on bikes where I am now.

Sorry not home to check the compression specs, my friend has a 450 in his shop and the shop manual. But 90/110 is pretty low and quite a differential between the cylinders.Too much of a differential.

If the owner did the compression test himself, ask him if he did it with or without oil in the cylinders....or both if just to compare results and get a better idea of what the problem is. But neither would be an easy fix without a shop and tools.

I did a bit more research and decided not to purchase it.

You likely made the right choice. Unless it's free, and even then, maybe not.
In North America, that model is actually considered a 425. Whether the 450 that came later is much different, I'm not sure. But compression might be one of the differences.
If you get far enough away, you'll be on your way home.
