obviously seat/tank, and then had to remove the adventure tank frame, which mounts to the front four radiator mounts. removed the rear radiator screws just so I could push the radiators out of the way. Getting to the radiator mount bolts with the plastic guards and the tank frame in the way was a f-in pain. don't think I'm putting those plastic guards back on cuz they just seem to collect dirt and leaves and pine needles, and you can't reach in there and clean them out.

Another question: is yours an oil-in-frame job? If so, did you drain the oil?

yes, and no. We talked about it, they welded onto a sheet that was already welded onto the tube, they used a "cooler" method MIG or TIG I think, and it was so short of contact anyway, there was no way that oil and frame didn't just suck all that heat right up. I think you'd have to be a ham-handed welder to burn through.

Riser Question.

Hello, I just picked up a New to me 06' 640 Adventure. I am 6'4'' and the bars are definitely too low for me. I am thinking of some ROX or the like 2 inch risers to put the bars forward and up. Can anyone tell me if they have something similar, and if a 2 inch rise will work with all the stock cables. Thanks!

I had the stock cables (except for the decomp, get an earlier model decomp cable (I think about 2000)) with the ROX and a Stenhouse under bar mount for the Scott steering damper. It's tight and I had to alter the positioning of the cables and wiring.

I've got 2" Rox risers on my 2000 Adv with no real issues. Had to route the decomp cable between the risers to so it didn't catch on the upper
triple clamp pinch bolts. I'm about 6'4" as well and the reach to the bar is very comfortable with the risers and Tusk Chub fat bars. Not sure which bend they are since the previous owner put them on. I also have Protaper low pegs mounted so that may affect my position from stock too.

I too am 6'4" and like the others I run the 2" Rox risers with the Stenhouse risers as well. With the stock handlebars.

The throttle cables will stick when you turn, solve that by putting the cables below your mirror mount. Or in front of as your sitting on the bike.

As for the decomp cable I had mine lengthend by my local KTM dealer:

Motosports in Des Moines Iowa.

Talk to Doug the owner, he will get you squared away.

You looking for just an LED bulb, or a whole tail light assembly?

Queen of Spades has what seems like a really nice and bright LED bulb here..

LINK

Don't know nothing about an entire assembly though.

I found mine cracked about 50K km back, took off the rads, cleaned up the area & stuck em back on with the stick welder with the bike laid over. They have cracked again I just noticed, so I'm going to fix at the next service - will gusset them up a bit too now I have a TIG. I think one of the LC4 regulars (Tseta? Laramie?) put up a few pics of strengthening up these mounts some time back.

Bring yours up with some beer & we'll do both at once

Cheers
Clint

Thanks! Sounds like ROX are the way to go. Also sounds like you didn't need a new decomp just a re-route which would be nice. Would you mind telling me more about the Protaper lower pegs and where I can get them? I have not come across these. Thank You!

Thanks for all the tips with the throttle cables. I am somewhat new to wrenching on bikes and can hopefully figure it all out. Again, sounds like ROX are the way to go. But, can't believe you use the Stenhouse combo with it also. I am hoping I don't have to deal with a longer de comp cable as hopefully I can reroute them. If not though, Hope I can find a place like you did. The dealer here sucks. Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the info! I am thinking of going with just the ROX 2 inch, so hopefully won't need a new decomp cable. If so though, it sounds like the earlier model cables are longer? Again, thanks for the help. I have 2 months to fully set this bike up for me for the RMAR rides in CO.
