No shit. I have been through two defective Spots and sold my last (3rd) replacement. I want nothing to do with them again. I'll pay a little more for INREACH or buy a sat phone on the iridium network and use prepaid cards.

lol... There was another thread on this already. I think I might have gotten the first reply on that one, and I said the same thing.

The coverage map is hilarious. It mostly a map saying "it probably wont work anywhere in the world", like an at&t cell map.

At 25 per minute I suppose only Ewen and Charlie will have one; free from the manufacturer with unlimited talk and text of course. In reality though it does kick Iridium;s ass at $1.29 per minute. Hopefully this will cause Iridium to lower their rates as well.

My understanding is that the Spot phone is using the same satellites as Globalstar = POS. I paid $1000 for my Globalstar Satt in 07 and can rarely make a call. Irridium actually works which is why I am guessing the price is higher than the Spot phones.
BTW the spot phone is identical to my Globalstar = same company?

My $0.02

Dead spots in the tracks or messages that didn't go out?

Never messed with the tracking part of it but I am pretty sure all of my "I'm ok" messages have worked.

+1

There's a big difference between a tracking point not showing up and an OK/Help/911 not working.

I've never had an OK or Help not show up when I pressed it.

I have. Hit ok maybe 10-15 times. Different locations (i was walking out). batteries were good. People were out looking for me in terrible weather. Not one ok got through.

Canceled the service.

I think the true benefit to SPOT is not having a phone handy

I don't have cable or dish. I have heard that the dish (satellite tv) isn't the greatest in poor weather, some report service goes away. I wonder if the spot suffers the same or similar malady?

Tracks, not sure about OK messages. I'm opposite of you, I've not used the message feature much. I guess I'd have to ask Lisa if she ever got a message.
