Highway blockage, Mexican Rt. 15, south of Hermosillo, MX

The Yaqui Indian Nation has been protesting a loss of their water rights and have been staging a peaceful (so far) blockage of traffic on Rt. 15 near a town called Vicam. This has gone on for about a week and anyone riding through Sonora can count on a delay anywhere from 2 hours to 24 hours with little opportunity to ride around on alternate routes.

Blockade continues. I found this today on a mailing list of ex-pats in Mazatlan:

"I'm on Tufesa's mailing list, and just received an announcement from them, about half an hour ago. The blockade is open for ONE HOUR, and closed for THREE HOURS, each four hours, day and night. There was no indication that this would change in the near future. The advisement was to go around the blockade whenever possible, as the one hour opening is barely enough to get the backup cleared before the blockade is put back up. "

Any update on what's going on?
I'm thinking about running up through there in the next day or two...

This was posted on a mailing list of ex-pats in Mazatlan last night:

"I went through Vicam headed north today at noon. There was about a mile of truck traffic stopped. I detoured through town (dirt street, potholes) and made it in about fifteen minutes.

There is a cottage industry that has sprung up in homemade roadblocks to deny access back to the Autopista. Several small "tolls" we're required to get local folks to roll away large stones they are using to block access. Also bring extra bottled water to give away. It is 105 degrees out there. "

Good luck!
