Canyonlands Adventure Ride 2013

Late last year COXR650L from Dubinky Adventure Apparel p0sted up looking for folks to do a ride that circles Canyonlands National Park. For those of you who don't know there's an effort underway to close off much of the park to motorized traffic by giving it a wilderness designation. Ben (COXR650L) stepped up and organized this ride to shed some light on the situation and raise some much needed bucks for the Utah Shared Access Alliance. Canyonlands National Park includes some of the most remote areas in the US, without motorized access appoximately 80% of the park becomes inaccessable to anyone but Rafting companies and few other select venues, biker trash like us aren't on that list.

Enough with the soapbox, get get on to the ride

The plan was to take 3 days circling the park going clockwise, 500 miles, minimal pavement, maximum adventure

A good sized crew showed up, I think there were 20 riders from across the country. Most of us started out in Moab but 500 miles wasn't enough for Bash (Assfault) and Akasy, these hardcore dudes tacked on the Kokopilli trail and rode in from Colorado

Just to raise the bar a little they came down Rosegarden Hill, I'm still waitin to see that vid

After hitting the Moab Diner we met up at Mickey Ds.

We headed out Kane Creek, next stop Hurrah Pass

Thanks for starting the thread Chris and thanks for the props, but I think a lot of the ride planning credit can go to you, the GPS (and video) wizard!!!

We had a really great group of people for the ride, I know me and the family were really happy to be able to host the ride!

Hopefully people will read this and send a few bucks to the Shared Access Alliance to help keep this area accessible.

Keep up the great RR

Closing public lands for the exclusive use of special interests...
Sounds like a typical use of our tax dollars by our government.
Whats next, clear cutting amazon rainforests so we can have ethanol in our fuel?
Drilling for oil in an Alaskan Wilderness.
Oh wait...

Anyway, I'm "IN" for this Ride Report.

So after regrouping up on Hurrah we headed down towards Chicken Corners. The Lockhart Basin trail starts a few miles before Chicken corners, it's easy to miss.

This was the first spot where we got to dustoff the Utah skills, there would be plenty of other such opportunities.

Right as we pulled up out of this canyon, Bash discovered he had a flat rear tire. Of course there was no shortage of sage advise. Seeing a need, I jumped right in and held the pressure guage, a critical task that was not to be taken lightly.

It looked like the tube got pinched in the rimlock and it took about 10 miles to let go. Bash's air compressor blew up half way through the fill so we had to resort to actually pumping up the tire Got it repaired and I jumped in and set the pressure because that's the kind of riding partner I am, always ready to help out

School's over, it was time to ride

This video covers the ride down from Hurrah Pass through Lockhart Basin out to the Needles District of Canyonlands NP. This section covers about 50 miles of jeep road that parallels the Colorado as it approached the confluence with the Green River. It's not too difficult but there is some spots where it gets your attention. The total lack of water in this area makes it unrealistic to explore without some type of vehicle unless you got wings handy and can fly 800' down to the river, Dead Horse Point got that name for a reason.

Enjoy

Yeah, that IS the best Moab video I've seen -- especially the Lockhart Basin. Wow.

Following the ride through Lockhart we pulled into the Needles Outpost for fuel. The female female propriator can be a little crazy, its sort of a running joke here in the Rockies. During our visit she couldn't have been nicer going out of her way to make lunch for 20 hungry bikers. It was a good burger but fuel $6 a gal, beats heading into town though.
