Question What Is This Bike Worth?

Belongs to a recently widowed woman in Fairbanks. KLR250 was under a weathered tarp for an unknown length of time. It's a 1986 with a little over 400 miles on it. Engine turns over, it's not been down and it's not damaged other than one mirror is broken. Fluids changed except the front brake fluid. Opened the bleed at the wheel, opened the reservoir and filled it with fresh dot 3 and attempted to pump the fresh fluid thru and nothing happens when trying to pump it up with the bleed closed at the wheel. The brake handle just operates w/ no resistance and no fluid is going through. The front brake worked fine when off loaded it from a pickup. Waiting for a battery to charge to try to start it.

Assuming it runs well and the brke issue is sorted out, what do you think is a reasonable asking price? Any ideas on the brake?

With that low of miles I would think $1500 would be a good asking price. Did you try back bleeding the brakes?

There may be something blocking the holes on the cylinder keeping the front brake from building pressure. I would bet a master cylinder rebuild kit would fix it.

Excellent NADA value is $550, but by the looks of it from the pic it's in better shape than Excellent. I'd ask $1k and be firm. Also, agree on the master cylinder rebuild. If the fluid was low/empty after sitting so long the seals could have rotted out and blocked the line somewhere.

If the brake worked fine before then you probably introduced air into the system. Back bleeding only takes a few minutes and I would certainly try it before buying a rebuild kit. A hand pump oiler with a piece if clear vinyl tubing hose clamped on the end works great. Just buy a new one (they're inexpensive), and put brake fluid in it. I would suck out half the fluid from the reservoir first and then slowly pump the system full from the bleeder nut and then close it before removing the hose. Filling from the bottom should remove the air.

Thanks Beezer. I'm in Montana, but I will pass along your offer to the guy in Fairbanks who is trying to help out the owner.
