That's an incredible day. I think we can all relate to just having to go when you have to go.

Late to the party. Just got caught up. What a ride so far! Jeff I've been where you were myself. Just wanting to be alone and untethered. Don't beat yourself up too bad. Things like this were on my mind before we went out west last year but I couldn't have been happier with how that trip turned out.

Chin up dude and get your ass to Colorado so Gene can abuse us again I've been on the fence but it's looking better.

John

John,
I'd say Colorado is 60/40 on going.. When I got back from Alaska it was 20/80 not going.. Now I'm thinking I better get the XC ready.

Day 9 Fairbanks, AK to Dawson City, YT (433 miles.. Light day)
You can see a detour on the map. I was tempted to go over to Eagle, I'll discuss that in a minute.) Today's route is in RED once again.

On my own, I headed out.. The second half of the trip was for me, much more scenic, and more of what I hoped the trip would be. The drive over from Fairbanks to Chicken and on into Dawson City was just plain fun.. It was raining most of the way back towards Tetlin Junction and the turnoff towards Chicken. The rain let up, and the moose were out, I must have seen seven or eight. One big cow ran across the road right in front of me. Geeze they are big.. (sorry no pics, I was wishing I had a go-pro about that time..) Then the roads started to get a few more turns. Ha! Before I knew it I was in Chicken..

(Bet you've never seen a picture of this egg before..) I took it anyway!
The roads were more of what I expected Alaska to be..

You can see this one going on over the next hill.

I noticed a turn off towards Eagle.. It looked so good, I had to check it out.. It's roads like these, I could ride forever..

The road I came down on is off to the left.. I came to a wood plank bridge I felt comfortable stopping on. I wasn't holding up traffic, I hadn't seen a soul for a long time. You better be able to tolerate your own company out here..

I had to turn back though.. Eagle isn't exactly on the way to Dawson City.
There's my road, running along the ridge on the left.

Before I knew it, I was heading back into the Yukon.
Traffic was backed up again, I'm used to it though..

The ferry going over to Dawson City was packed.. I did make another mistake. I should have camped on the other side of the river..

The campground in Dawson City was full. I noticed a place called the "Bunk House" with a lot of bikes around it, so I stayed there. No A/C, I'm sure they don't need it most of the time, but it was on the warm side. I had a great meal over at a restaurant by the bunkhouse.. The beer was cold.

They make fish and chips with fresh salmon.. I was living large.
Alas, I was once again deprived of sleep, but this is too good of a story not to tell. I had the window open to cool off, and about 3 in the morning it sounds like a big party right outside my door. So I was awake.. I went out to do what all old guys do at 3 in the morning, lose some of the beer I had put down earlier.. There was a drunk guy with dreadlocks down to his waist and his drunk girlfriend stumbling around outside my door. They were trying to get into the room next to me. They finally got in the room, and that's when the real party started. oh, ohh, Oh, OHHHH!! yes, Yes, YES, YES!!! It was loud enough, we could have been room-mates.. Ha, (sorry, no pics.)
I still slept in. The heat finally did break, including the two in heat next door..
Tomorrow, it's back down the Campbell Highway (4) towards Watson Lake.. Which I decided was not "big bike friendly" but beautiful..

My first big trip was something similar: Colorado Springs to Skagway and back, in 13 days (466mi/day). And I thought I was tired when I got back, you must have been dead on your feet! Keep it coming!

I swear I thought you guys were right behind me. Yeah that's it! Seems Jeff took off in the other direction same time I did and the Texas boys were all alone in the big empty.

Reading about the dreadlocked drunk reminded me of a story. When I did the TAT I stayed in a room above a Mexican restaurant in Freedom OK that had been recommended by BigDon. Maria's Cafe. Restaurant below and two room up. The other room was occupied late by a young couple that were very much like your neighbors. Loud and proud.
