The bubble sextant mounts in there. It's both an astrodome and an escape hatch.

The rubber mallet percussion testing must be nerve-wracking.

Congratulations to the team; you guys are doing some long hours, and it's paying off.

If I may; Does that have a second seat? What's the exhaust type shroud behind belly the air inlet? Are the flaps 1/2 down? That, or it almost looks like a little left aileron is up, too?

There is room for a "small" second person back there as it is currently fitted, but no seat at this point. What you are looking on the bottom of the belly is the radiator outflow. The radiator on these has an intake between the wings on the belly. Basically like cowl flaps. And yeah, the flaps are down. This is a recent pic, but not from today. I was not there either time so dont know what he was testing.

OK. If you don't mind, more questions: What is the MP & boost on this for a full performance takeoff using max octane? What is the octane of race gas? Can you ferry it on avgas? What does it burn GPH racing? What about cross country medium range cruise?

What a ride! Looks like something from an old 3 Stooges film.

Thank you for that.

It led me to search for an engineer's story, and the three pages of this site were an interesting, and sad, read.

Seems like I remember a video that included an interview with the mechanic hanging on to the tail of the Spit...

SHE (as opposed to he) held on until the pilot landed. The tower did not tell the pilot of the mechanic hanging on for fear that he would over-control.

I believe that video is included in this thread, some pages back.

PS: Here's a newspaper account, http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/1111081

PSS: Hard to believe, but it happened at least a second time... http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/38338924
