Sorry it's only a cell phone cam and not as good as the rest of these, but here is my contribution. Any tips on what I did right/wrong are appreciated.

Finally picked up a camera that isn't a point-n-shoot. Read through the owner's manual and started taking shots. Soon, I was collecting bracketed photos. Here are a few of my first attempts at HDR.

Question: Does all the customization to the colors and effects have to be performed prior to the photos being merged?

Guess I ought to stop here.

No. Experiment. Go Crazy. Find what works and what doesn't. There's no right answer. Most tutorials I've read recommend not doing many edits before merging to HDR. I often make minor changes before sending to the HDR program and sometimes I make major changes. Try to avoid sharpening prior to merging as it could affect the auto-aligning as each exposure may change in a different way. Once you merge into the HDR program you are looking at a preview. Play with ALL of the sliders until you understand what each does and don't rely much on presets as each photo may need different treatment to get the best look. After it is done in HDR software I do additional processing such as adding contrast, sharpening etc. I hope that helps. Your photos are already looking cool.

Nice shots Motocopter! As Dave said, you cannot play with settings enough, not only on the camera but in post processing. You might find something that defines your style from the 5 ba-zillion other photographers out there!
