You guys keep letting this thread get buried.

Managed to put mine for sale and buy a klx250 to replace it. Dont think I can go through with it. The klx is turning into a fun single track bike, but it has nothing on the piggy when the road opens up. Did get rid of the klr though, doubt I'll miss it.

Giving up on the 'one bike fits all' idea that never seems to work anyways. Xrr is the touring bike now, klx for single track and weekend rides.

Piggy as it sits. Probably going to order some more streetable tires soon and keep these for the klx. Haven't decided on what to get though, I don't want to completely kill the off-road ability.

New toy. Leftover 2012, $4500 plus sales tax. I think I did good.

Umm....

I had a klr650 that I guess some would call an adventure touring bike, and an xr650r that I was using as a dual sport/trail bike.

Sold the klr and bought a klx with the intention of selling the xr and using the klx as a dual sport/trail/adventure tourer.

Decided, after spending a weekend with the klx, that the xr isn't going anywhere and it's getting turned into a more 'adventure touring' capable mount. Which will be easier now since it doesn't need to also do tight eastern single track type trails. Weight isn't as big of a concern like it was before.

Found what is one of my favorite threads buried 4 months back, was (am) excited to take more advantage of the mods here, and decided to make a post.

-I'm sorry if my post didn't meet your criteria of an 'acceptable' post per the thread title. I was unaware that only xr owners with already modified bikes were allowed to post here.

-if you look in the main xr thread, about 2 posts back, there's a guy that is considering buying an xr for the exact use that this thread implies. Obviously this particular 4 month old thread didn't come up on his radar, and it seems to me that many of the posts in that thread are already answered in this one.

You're right.

After riding the klx all weekend I got on the XR about 30 minutes before my first post. Stalled it 3 times in my backyard because I forgot how to work the clutch or something. Remembered how to use that and almost backflipped it because it actually has power.

Once I got all of that sorted out I fell back in love (lust?) with the bike. I know now that it's not, nor will it ever be, a good bike for tight single track with me riding it. However, it's still a ridiculously fun bike that I think is worth more keeping that the price it will bring in.

I had plans last fall of trying to make it an adventure touring bike but didn't want to detract from it's off-road ability. That's not going to happen because it's already a heavy bike, and the more 'stuff' you put on for touring the heavier it gets. Had a Trail Tech Vapor, bigger radiators, fan, and dc power planned. All of that would add weight and complexity, and still would leave me with trying to make 'one bike fit all' when in reality I think it would fit neither. I'd have too much weight and gearing for the woods, and too aggressive of a tire for touring.

I put a set of supermoto wheels/tires on mine and it has been great for road work paved and gravel. It is good for forest service roads in my area as well.

I don't do single track on it. But I wouldn't single track a GS either.

Hello!

I ride an XR250R, But have 'taken' my dad's XR650R as mine...

Have been thinking about turning it into a Dual Sport bike, so I can keep my Versys clean . The only problem is being a student, I am poor, so the conversion will take a while, a wile indeed.

Stock '00 XR650R, only major plans are Sahara tank, Vector speedometer, baja designs kit, new stator, and a few misc. things as well.

(Yay first post!)

I've thought about the supermoto wheel idea, doubt I'd do it. Probably would like it too much when I was done and lose my license.

Did you do many suspension mods with the SM stuff? It is tempting if I found a used set for the right price.

Thats not too bad then. I'm only 150lbs, could probably just leave it alone and be happy enough.

If I find a set priced right I might go for it one day. I always see the ebay set for about $850 new without tires. Probably is a fair price considering it comes with rotors, sprocket, and bearings.

hi everyone
i just picked up a clean 05 xrr.
the bike was already plated so that is a huge help here in B.C
i plan on doing a few things and just wanted everyone advice.
the bike has the stock tank, i would like a min. of 250km range so i'am looking at a 6 gal tank.
Also need to get so hand guards, and i'am thinking of getting a complete hdb set-up (hand guards, mirrors, top clamp vapor mount) is this set-up worth the money?
The wirring is a hack job so i was looking at the vancouver suppermoto wiring harness, has anyone used one of these? They look slick!

Most of my ridding is logging roads and and such, no tight stuff yet, i also do a bit of highway ridding.

The bike currently has a Wolfman small expedition tank bag that works ok but i would like to install ether Wolfman Rollie bags or some Kerig 5l bags, in a saddle bag setup.
I'm going to just ride the crap out of her for the rest of the summer then strip her right down this winter. I've been researching different set-ups, (wife seems to think I'm ocd about this thing!)
any real world advice would help lots.

I would just make my own wiring harness. Pretty simple system. You can make a better one than you could buy I would think. My XRR came with an aftermarket dual sport wiring system and it was basically junk.
