late 90's-2002 Triumph Trophy?

From time to time I run across ads for them and I really like the look and they can be had for a fairly low price.

I've owned an 01 sprint RS and really liked it, other than the fact it was a top heavy pig.

Anyone have any experience with or time on them? Which engine is better? How do they handle for a sport tourer?

I just picked up a '97 Trophy 900 yesterday. The weather was a mixture of snow, hail, rain and blue skies with sun so I trailered it home. It has 47,000 miles and has had all the "common" failures taken care of. New coils, alternator bolt replaced, corbin seat. The only thing I don't like is the PO put on a set of D&D pipes that are louder than having nothing at all. I'm serious, it sounds like straight pipes about 6" long. I'm going to order a set of used pipes off of ebay tomorrow and see how that sounds. He included the stock jets for the carbs along with the rest of a Dynojet kit.
I'll keep the board informed on my likes/dislikes. So far it seems comfortable, solid and pretty quick. We'll see how that pans out!

I have a 1999 Trophy 1200 in British Racing Green-the fastest color.
A change of coils took care of a miss the previous owner couldn't resolve.
The oem shock was replaced with a Hagon unit and the forks got springs
matched for my weight and riding style. The handling is much improved, but the bike is still
a bit top heavy when pushing around the garage.
The 900 3 cylinder model weighs about 15 kilos less, but I wanted a 1200.
A well made motorcycle. Keep up on routine maintenance and they will last a long time.

Finally put a few miles on my now to me 900 Trophy today.
Wow, what a bike. That triple is a torque monster and sounds like nothing else. I installed my stock ebay pipes, put 120 Dynojet jets in the carbs and checked the air in the tires. Great machine so far. Everywhere I stopped, someone wanted to talk about it.

late 90's -2002 Triumph Trophy?

I had a 99 Trophy 900 and loved it. The starter went and it took over a month and a half to get the part and still no part. I traded it it while it was apart in the dealer's for a new Tiger 1050 in '09 or I would still have it. Love the Tiger but the Trophy is a brute. A great Spring/Fall bike. A little warm in summer but just go faster!

I love the T-3 Triumphs. In my garage is a 98 Sprint Sport and a 95 Sprint. Is my VFR a better bike in the short term, yes it is, but I'll grow old with the Sprint Sport. They are so reliable and durablitiy of the finish is the best of any bike I've owned. The Tridents and Sprints and Trophy's from that era are everything a motorcycle needs to be.

I am trading my KLR for a Triumph Trophy 1200 with Hagon shock and Racetech redone forks. It's an 02 model what should I be watching for in the way of problems or potential problems? I saw mention in the above posts about coil issues. It has a pretty good service record but I did not notice any mention of coil changes.

2002 Trophy 1200

I have had several Triumphs-Sprint RS, ST, Tiger 955i and the Trophy 1200.

The Trophy fit me like a glove, handled great, and was all day comfortable. However, it got terrible gas mileage and I could never sort it to the point where I could take it on long distance ride.

I did the carbs/coils/plug wires/battery-never did start well on cool to cold mornings.

Finally sent it down the road. :-(

Ive got a sweet 99 1200 Trophy in Silver for sale here in nor cal,Ive done all the pertinent maintenance on it,its ready to go anywhere.

Id love to sell it as Ive bought an 08 1250 Bandit and dont need two streetbikes to go with my 4 dirtbikes.

PM if anybody's interested and I'll send pics.

They ARE a sweet handling and running bike,runs harder then my 1250 Bandit easily.

What symptoms does a bad coil on these give? Are they intermitent? My bike runs hard and then it acts like 1 or 2 cylinders just stop firing and then pick back up.

Just sold my 2001 1200 in Platinum. I've owned a lot of the sport touring bikes, R1100S, VFR, ST2, K1100RS, K1200RS, R1100RT, Sprint ST, Tiger Steamer version. I really wanted to like the Trophy, I felt like I tried to turn the Sprint into a Trophy so I bought one. But the Trophy was heavy and a touring bike with lot's of weather protection. My 2001 Sprint ST with LSL bars, footpeg lowering kit, Corbin etc was awesome and if I ever find an Ashton Green low mileage version I'm buying another one. The Trophy carbs are old school and the wiring etc underneath the plastic is not in the same quality range as a lot of bikes. Safety wise, newer bikes and those with fuel injection, ABS and less weight are something to consider. For the value the Trophy is a lot of used bike for the money.
