$5 Boat Ride-Another Florida Scootabout

The weather forecast for Sunday looked good and a little scooter exploring was on.
Last week took me down to St. Augustine and this trip would be North on A1A to Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach with the help of the Mayport Ferry.
The ride out to Mayport was pleasant and the views while crossing the Intra Costal Waterway were nice.
I arrived at the ferry landing just as the Jean Ribault was pulling out. Oh well, stretch out on some rocks in the shade and watch the boat traffic on the St. Johns.

Soon it was time to make the crossing....

Looking back at the pilot house...

Some of the local fishing fleet...fresh Mayport shrimp are sooo delicious!

In the first photo looking off the bow, you may see a fairly large white vessel on the other side of the river. While waiting for the ferry to return I asked one of the attendants about the ship. He told an interesting tale of how it was built for research. It led a secret life as a spy ship for the CIA!

Five bucks and fifteen minutes later we were ordered to disembark.

From here, A1A heads towards Little and Big Talbot Island State Park. Beautiful open beaches with no development could be glimpsed. Maybe when it cools down a trip with some beach walking can be arranged.

Taking a break I was treated to these views of the marshes and tidal creeks.

Love those live oaks and the moss....

Back on the highway, cruising along about 50-55 I soon reached the Amelia Island Resort area. It is quite built up, but not in an obtrusive way. The road is set far enough off the shore there are no views of the beach itself until you reach Fernandina Beach. Typical beach bungalow architecture ranging from shabby to sheik. Great beach! Wide strand and not crowded.

I was now thirsty and hungry. Time to head to the old part of Fernandina.
The Palace looked like a happening place...

A sandwich and cold drink in the AC refreshed me for the ride back.
There is a bit of a "Pirate" thing going on here and lots of history...

Nice, classic "Old Florida" architecture...

On the way back down the road, another rest area beckoned. Tired from the heat and sleepy from the food; I flopped on a table and took a short nap. What a view when you open your eyes!

This Piaggio Fly 150 sort of "found" me last week. A chap staying in my RV park saw us removing a generator from an old motor coach. He was keenly interested, saying "I could use that". He knew I liked scooters and showed me the Piaggio asking if a trade might be in order. My Multiple Bike Disorder kicked in and the deal was done.
It is a fun scoot. Plans are to keep it in Florida while my "new to me" Vespa will go home to the mountains.

I passed the ferry heading back and took US 17 south through downtown (pretty quiet on a Sunday afternoon) and home to Yukon.

It was hot, typical of the "dog days" of August.
Riding along the coast and feeling the cooler sea breeze was refreshing. The "new" scoot is a fun ride and just being out on two wheels was great!

About the white research vessel. I suspect it is probably either a NOAA research vessel or one of the NAVOCEANO vessels. Nowhere close to the CIA. We see those vessels here on the Mississippi Coast all the time.
Nice pics by the way !

Nice ride report. It feels odd to see you riding in my back yard, yet I'm right here and don't take advantage of it often enough.

Seen anew through another man's eyes... Glad you're having fun.

Thanks, Ace. It was indeed a NOAA vessel...

If the gentleman's story was overstated it was still an entertaining tale. I will still keep my tinfoil hat handy. L.O.L

Mini, are you in Jax or Nassau County? You wouldn't be a member of 7 Bridges Scooter club, would you?
Eighteen members came to J. L. Trent's in Yukon for dinner last night.
Pretty neat showing up with a crew of scooter "hooligans".

Cool2

What a great little trip up and down the coast. I am on the other coast of Florida and have been wanting to take a trip up to St. Augustine. I'll have to check those parks out.

I'm in Jax. I used to run the SE coast and N GA / W NC on a regular basis, so photos of these areas always bring a smile. Not enough free time available to commit to a club - especially one that'd have me.

Taking my wife to one of her Doc Appts. in the a.m. and I'll be right outside Yukon. Much quieter than I remember it to be in my youth.

Nice ride report - two things I appreciate: scooters and boats. Of course, I may be biased.

Best wishes,
Captain Jim

Good report, thanks. Your pictures brought back many fond memories.

If I remember correctly the Plaza claims to be the oldest bar in Florida. Definitely a dive, definately worth a stop.

That's the Pallace in fernandina beach. Petes bar in Jax Beach makes the same claim. Either way both have been serving thirsty folks for years and years!

Be Big,

I have an Elite 80 in the garage and have regularly ridden it up and down A1A from Fernandina Beach to South Daytona from my home in Jacksonville. The longest ride was 135 miles. I would join Seven Bridges but their bylaws insist a machine has to do 55 mph to come on their rides.

By the way, the white research vessel Atlantis II at Daly's yard on Fort George island was the vessel chartered by Dr. Robert Ballard for the first Titanic expedition in 1986. The first look at the Titanic since 1912 was from the deck house of Atlantis II.

Riding that highway...

Dave,a great vanity tag for your scoot would be "A1ALIFE". Thanks for the pics and info on Atlantis II.
You don't have to go 55 for me to ride with you. I'm at Yukon every other two weeks. Lets scoot!
