My new setup since I switched to a new bike. Really liking the top loading Givi E21s. My form of habitation changes everynow and then. I have a Noahs tarp which I like to use but I've also got a Kelty Salida 2 that I like to use more if I don't want to sleep out under the stars.

I'm thinking of going to a larger tent so I have some moving around room on those rainy days. Leaning towards another Kelty like a Ridgeline 3 or 4 or something similar to it.

Here is all of my gear -- except for tent, sleeping bag and mattress pad -- that I took on an overnighter on the Denali Highway:

...and loaded up on the bike:

I have since ditched the tail bag (zipper wore out) and added a second dry bag.

$900? No, it was something like $200. From Force Accessories.

Shakedown weekend in prep for a 2 week US east coast ride. Tent is three-man Kelty Radiant (discontinued); pad is a Exped Sim Comfort 10. Motofizz Medium tailbag on a SW Motech soft rack. Motofizz holds sleeping bag, tent poles, Kermit chair, Tamrac Zipshot tripod. Right pannier holds clothes, left pannier MSR stove, water pot, food and walking shoes.

Tent is big to pack, but also big enough that I can comfortably sit in the Kermit in the tent and ride out the weather if I need to.

This is the thing, one night, 10 nights, 20 nights, there is a minimum that you need to carry.

From a four day trip around the U.P. and northern Wisc. last weekend:

In the green dry sack: Hennessy hammock with Super Shelter, top quilt

In the Giant Loop: cooking gear (small pot, cup, spork, "fancy feast" alcohol stove, misc other stuff), food, Alite chair, spare clothes (fleece sweater, undies, shirt), tarps (one for hammock, one for bike and gear) in their own dry sack, rain pants (I wear a waterproof jacket), spare rear tube, camp shoes, thermal liner for jacket if it's warm (otherwise it's kept handy strapped outside), personal hygiene stuff.

The tank panniers are a cheap pair of tiny daypacks I got at Walmart a few years ago. They are always on the bike and hold stuff I might need during the day- snacks, bug dope, T.P., spare gloves, first aid kit, Buff, knife, matches, probably some other things I'm forgetting. I borrowed the Wolfman tankbag from my wife's bike for this trip to hold a few other items, as well as a ziplock bag full of maps. Oh yeah, a bottle of Heet for the stove sits upright in one of the tank panniers- I don't trust the seal on the bottle enough to stuff it on it's side in the GL.

The soft canteen usually rides rolled up in a tank pannier; I fill it as late as I can and strap in to the back to supplement what's in my Camelback.

Tools and a spare front tube are in the tool tube and fender bag.

Here's a camp along a river in the U.P.:

As has been said, light and compact is expensive. It's taken me a few years to trim down to this load, and I probably could go even less, but this seems to work pretty well. It's all I need for solo trips. Compare it to a trip I took with my son a few years ago, actually my first M/C camping trip:

The poor Super Sherpa was loaded down. Someone said we just needed a wire cage with some live chickens to complete the Third World look.

Cheers,
Dave

Yeah, my basic kit is the same for one night or one month or one year....
My one week kit is twice the size of my 1 month kit, the difference being for 1 week I want to be fully self-sufficient.... For 1 month I have to shop so I don't even try to carry as much... Kay-cera....
