Actually the business people are the ones that wanted the state statutes written like that for them. Creates a nice monoply for them in the "dry" counties. The politicians and lawyers are just the tools who get paid by the business people.

This is why I'm staying the hell off the dragon. For all intents and purposes it appears to have become a circus. All I need is for some darksider on his cruising barge wearing a novelty helmet, shorts and flip flops to run a corner wide and take me out. No thanks. You couldn't pay me to ride there.

For the most part, I agree with what you are saying, but you do realize that your quote refers to accidents that happened on 143, not 129, right ?

Potential dragon slayers, slayed by the dragon, again!

Over rated, well marketed road for only those who really know how to ride!

I liked the "dragon" back when it was dirt, now I go out of my way to avoid it!

So the fatality was a car tire darksider. Guess the sidewalls of that tire didn't have much grip. He is truly now firmly on the darkside and his wife with cancer will have to deal with her ordeal alone. How sad.

On the contrary, it is cleverly drafted to exempt only those particular types of businesses that the lawmakers wished to favor. There was nothing stupid about it. Corrupt perhaps, but hardly stupid to get a law like that passed for your clients....

Q: How many counties in North Carolina are dry?
There is currently one dry county: Graham

NC Statute that allows liquor sales in Graham County is at
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedL...S_18B-101.html
(14b) "Tourism resort" means:
a. Any restaurant and lodging facility, whether public or private, owned and operated as a resort property offering food, beverage, lodging, and meeting facilities to travelers and tourists and featuring one or more golf courses and two or more tennis courts along with other recreational and sporting activities, or
b. Any restaurant, whether public or private, owned and operated as a resort property offering food and beverage to travelers and tourists and featuring an equestrian center and two or more tennis courts along with other recreational and sporting activities.
Receipts from sporting and recreational activities of a tourism resort shall be at least twenty-five percent (25%) of total gross receipts. Receipts from the sale of alcoholic beverages shall not exceed fifty percent (50%) of total gross receipts. A tourism resort open to the public shall advertise at least quarterly in a regional or national travel or sports industry publication, or in the State travel guide published by the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

I read the statute to say that you must have a golf course and two tennis courts or an equestrian center and two tennis courts. There are no golf courses in Graham County and what defines an equestrian center, a horse stall?
The county of Swain is dry. I only live here. Within the city limits of Bryson City is the only place you can get alcohol. That's why the Exxon on the edge of town has beer and the corner store between Bryson and Cherokee on US19 at the intersection of Coopers Creek Rd doesn't. The city of Bryson voted it in, not the county. I can only assume that since there is alcohol sold in the county, the ABC doesn't consider it dry, but the county itself is dry.

Until very recently, Jackson county/Sylva had the same arrangement. Within the Sylva city limits, you could purchase beer, wine and liquor. Last year, Jackson voted to sell it and now, the Exxon at the edge of the Cherokee Reservation sells beer and wine along with all of the other convenience stores and restaurants (those that decided to) in Jackson county, but outside the Sylva city limits.

And yes, a horse stall qualifies as an "equestrian center." That along with the two tennis courts above the motel are the only reasons the DGMR can sell beer, not because they are in Swain county.

The wooden stalls in the photo are the "horse stables" at DGMR.

The tennis courts are up the hill behind the motel.

Actually the darksider was a single vehicle hit, from what I read.

The guy that ran wide was on a Triumph, no mention of his tire or oil choice though.

Dragon, or not there is always the chance to come across some asshole riding way over his head.

No matter how you look at it this whole story sucks.
As far as the darkside thing goes, I could see maybe (ok not really) running one on a slab ride, but not on the dragon. WTF??
