Pretty cool! I did a little bit on NICU (I'm a Registered Nurse) here at Winnie Palmer Hospital but it wasn't my cup of tea. Eventually did pediatric ER and now surgery. My respects to you and the joy you bring to parents with little to no hope.

Ryman should know how to run a meth lab better after the first explosion.

The $2 part...

I was reading a thread one day, I think it was Neduro's Dakar thread, and he wrote something to the effect that it's always an easily replaceable $2 part that fails, and kills the dream. True dat!

While doing an oil change last summer, I noticed that the aluminum bolts that are removed for said oil change were stripped in the middle of the bolt.

Although I consider myself a reasonably smart guy, I have my blonde moments, and this was one of them.

Rather than replace the bolts with OEM aluminum parts (the proverbial $2 part), I replaced them with stainless steel bolts. Apparently there is a process called Galvanic Corrosion that occurs when dissimilar metals are in contact with each other.

So... there I am in Northern Idaho, doing something I have done at least a dozen times - an oil change on the Snaggle-toothed groovinator - when SNAP! First the stainless steel bolt, then my psyche!

I snapped the head of the bolt the case. Very little torque was required to perform this act and it happened while putting the cover back on the oil filter.

The Gunn boyz and I (Live2ride, Bgunn, and Mi Vale Madre) tried a number of extraction methods before finally driving to Coeur d'Alene for a bolt-extractor. While using said bolt extractor, the case cracked on the collar where the bolt holds the oil cap in place. Motherscratcher!

We cleaned the case well with acetone and JB-welded the cap in place, allowing plenty of time to dry before oiling her up and taking her for a test ride.

This was the result:

Nice try boys. However, as riders we are nothing if not optimistic. We all had the same comment, "well at least the chain is well-oiled!"

P.S. Once I got home, my local mechanic told me had I used the liquid JB-Weld, rather than the stick, our JB-Weld fix probably would have worked.

THE 2 dollar bolt

I was gonna say you were lucky on the aluminum bolt because in the photo it looks stretched to the point of breaking. That is until I read further down about the stainless bolt breaking! Waiting for more......
