Glad you're here to tell the tale. Looks like the DR might be fine with a couple of new parts, a fork tweak, and a wash.
The morphine made 0 difference in that adventure. Not going to lie I almost cried I was so happy about the bike being in good shape. I was a happy man.

Highway 6 is a good canyon for that.

This used to be my favorite photo of a (former) herd of deer:

Big-assed dually skid marks and two dead mulies in the borrow ditch, front bumper of the truck in the ditch about a mile down the road. Ha! Take that, Bambis, you fuckers!

Then, I saw your photo and I have a new favorite deer picture!

I used to live in Wyoming and thought the deer were bad out there, but the white tails in Virginia are another story - zillions of them and endless cover for them to hide in until you're in range, then BAM!

Gawd, that was one well and truly broken leg you had there . Glad you survived and glad you're healing up. My son has a titanium rod like that in his leg, healed fine and no issues. I dunno about the DR650, I'd have a shop take a hard look at that for insurance purposes (pull the plastic and tank off, etc.). The DR is a tough bike but it could be twisted in ways you can't see in a casual inspection. That was a hell of a hit, man.

Heal well, glad all is looking up!

Doug

Dude, heal up. I had exactly the same thing happen to me last week. Riding along a straight gravel section of road, 32 mph and BAM! Huge deer ran right into me from my right. I hardly even saw the damn thing, it happened so fast. Result: broken collar bone, 4 fractured ribs, fractured scapula. My collar bone is being operated on next week. My new GSW had 470 miles on it. :(

Good luck to you, I know just how fast and hard those mfers hit.

Dam, good luck to you as well. I'm glad I only broke a leg. Yes that dear hit fast. Barely time to acknowledge it was going to happen. Sucks about your bike to. I've had mine for a little over 2 months now and am at almost 5000.

prayers and thinking about you

I know what you are going thru as I am recovering from the deer vs m/c. The abrasions heel soon but the bones are something else. I did not realize how many of us are hit a week until I started researcing this while recuperating. It seems that there is an epidemic number of deer in the south and elsewhere too. Hang in there mate as all will hopfully heal in time. P.S. I used to live in Belt,Mt. just out of Great Falls,Mt. Alan

Get well soon.

Reading up on deer strikes - there are over 750,000 deer vs. vehicle hits a year. I have hit 2 in my life - both in cages. Lets hope I have filled my quota.

Wow that double fracture looks terrible in the x-ray. Hope you are feeling better soon...

Did you at least get the rack to put on your wall?

Had a few close calls on the bike and one impact with a car which sucked a lot as it was a fairly rare (in North America) car having only been imported for 1990 and 1991, loved that car. Not that it is any consolation but I hear a busted tailbone is quite the eye opener on the pain register when you perch yourself over the bowl to push out a grumpy.

Just a little update. Leg feals like it is healing well and the bike is tore down waiting on parts. I figured while it was down I would re wire the stator to the Delta and replace the neutral ind switch screwes. I also went ahead and replaced my clutch springs with barnett heavy duty. We are a little tight on money right now so it is taking me some time to get shit ordered for the bike. Next is going to be either handlebars (trailtexch X woods bars/heated grips or buell headlights for a conversion. Then after that I will need to get a spedo and I have decided to go with the Trail Tech Adventure.

I have an appointment with the orth Doc tomorrow, hoping he will say I can atleast get rid of one of the crutches.

Thats all I have for now. Hope to see you at DDSR. I will try to be there atleast friday night for dinner.
