Close to what? Indian is light-years away from producing and selling 250,000 units per year.

I'm probably the farthest thing to represent the pirate crowd imaginable but I was recently told to ride an '09 or newer Ultra Classic to fill a void in my current line up and let the bike speak for itself. I did 7 hours of plush, 2-up, music filled, highway, backroads, and gravel road this past Saturday and could have easily done another 7 after a quick pee and a sandwich.

Hate it or not, this bike just simply works for its intended purpose.
This +1

Not even a puimple on the MoCo's ass.

Don't get me wrong. I hope Indian does well but it will be years for them to scratch out 2% of the market. Victory has been at it for 15 years and has managed 1.6%

This is why HD is successful. They are comfortable, they are reliable, they have a classic American iron look(because they invented it) and believe it or not they are affordable to the masses. HD does one thing and it does it well & in todays corporate America that is rare since most want to appeal to the masses.

For me that big engine has ....well...a soul that I can feel. From other non HD bikes I get a different[good] feeling, & they are not the same. For most of us, whichever feeling pleases us, we choose that bike. What's really nice is that if we want both we can have them...parked next to each other in the garage.

There are a lot of bikes to experience here on this rock flying around the sun & so little time..............

They are simply the sole surviving American motorcycle manufacturer from the classic era, they did not "invent" the classic American standard, and their inability to successfully build anything else doesn't give them ownership of the genre.

what in gods green earth does it matter who invented what look.... every manufacturer has made bike with an iconic look for their brand, and every brand has their own following... we could argue for months who invented the "classic american bike" (whatever the fuck that is) and no one would be right and no one would be wrong.... the bottom line here is HD is making some pretty damn good bikes right now, and they are making improvements every year.... Victory makes a good bike, the new Indians are getting great reviews, honda, guzi, bmw, ducati, aprilla, and on and on are all make some damn fine motorcycles... does that make one brand superior to the other.... yes sure it does the one you own is the best for you... in the end isnt the fact that there are so many good motorcycles on the market a high end problem and good for the sport??? I ride beemers right now.. does that mean i can't appreciate a harley???, or i can't wear my old leather jacket from time to time fuck no I'll wear what i choose, and ride what i want to ride, and i don't have enough time on this earth to look down my nose at someone just because they prefer a different bike to mine.. if you need to ride a specific brand of bike, and dress a specific way to feel like a motorcyclist then i suggest you have no idea what it is to ride.. not everyone wants to scrape pegs, or ride dirt,or break the sound barrier.. figure out what it is you want to do, and how you want to get there. then find a bike a bike that meets those needs and ride it.. if thats a HD great, but if it's not respect the fact that person didn't make their choice for your benefit and enjoy your own ride.... we will all be old be old and fed to the worms soon enough... i sure as fuck hope noone wries "he road xyz brand motorcycles" on my tombstone.. there are to many other more important things in life...

end rant here

If everyone on God's green earth approached life this way Somalia and the Middle East would be peaceful places to live and US politicians would get some work done. ADVRider gives the world the key to life. Will they hear?

If they do they could at least spell it right, it's one thing to look like an idiot while you are alive, no need to take it to the grave...

Problem is, there's an abundant supply of people who feel the need to judge the preferences of others.

When I had a Harley someone always felt the need to point out they are "slow and heavy". Having a metric now, I get to hear comments like its "just a copy" or "jap crap".

Its funny how some people feel superior because they purchased a certain brand or type.
