I want to trade my Harley in, prepare me...

..for what they will probably offer so that I don't get too disappointed.

I have a 2007 Harley Road Glide, 20,000 miles. It has the old frame and the 5 gallon tank. I want the new frame, and the 6 gallon tank. The used market is so saturated that I don't even want to try selling it there and people want that '09 up frame, like me.

So, what do you think would be the offer trading my bike in on a 2014 Road King, if they sell me the King at MSRP?

It will vary from dealer to dealer. But expect somewhere way south of 10k easily. Probably in the 6k-8k range. The 14's are very hot right now and the just the way it is.

FWIW, I traded my '06 Street Glide in on a '12 Road Glide Custom in December of 2011. My '06 had 40K miles with the 88" engine, 5 gallon tank, 5 speed, and no cruise control. The '12 has cruise, 103", 6 gallon tank, 6 speed tranny, and "new" '09-up frame.

Local dealer gave me $9500 for the SG and sold me the RG at MSRP. They then turned around a put a tag on my SG for $13,995 and it sold within 2 weeks. Don't know what they actually sold it for but this was in the winter of 2011. Salesman did say they could offer more on a SG as they were more popular and could easily sell them.

If in my part of the country, I'd be happy with $10K for your bike on a trade assuming it's in great shape.

Keep us posted and let us know what they say.

Will do, I have a very friendly small town dealership, Baxter's HD, here and I am sure they will treat me right, I just wanted to get prepared for how low of a number I would hear from them. If it's too low I will just pay big bucks for an aftermarket 6 (or even 7!) gallon tank and ride on as I have been overall satisfied with the Road Glide other than the wind buffeting that I have not experimented enough with to fix.

What I would really like is an '09 Road Glide in the same orange color I have but that is going to be hard to find on a dealer showroom to trade.

At the end of the day, as long as you are happy to get the bike you want and get a fair trade for the one you have now, that's all that matters.

Honestly, you'd get more value if you just sell it on your own...if you are patient.

Maybe you can arrange a swap with someone who has what you want and avoid the whole money thing?

I am on the verge of doing just such a thing with another inmate.

If you are able to get the Road King at MSRP + destination + tax without any other fees or market adjustment I would guess that the dealer would offer you no more than $6K or your current bike. Good luck buying a 2014 at MSRP right now.

Seems like if price were an issue you'd wait a half year. I got a sweet price on my 2011 because I bought it a week or two before the 2012s came out. Dealer wanted it off his floor asap.

You might be right on, other than the myth part, because the value is still there for me and I may just keep it and ride it another 20,000 miles and it won't be worth much less. There is a bottom to most motorcycle prices no matter the age nor miles and I tend to buy there rather than sell there.

Seems to be some truth to the myth at NADA:

I compared three 2007s. Ducati, BMW, HD. Harley holds better value by a prett good margin.

A large part of it is the local dealer, but I know one of the HD dealers nearish me won't even try to resell any bike they get if it has over 20k miles and consequently offer much lower than BB or NADA trade-in values for the area. So, putting another 20k probably wouldn't make $1 difference if you were to try trading someplace like that - personally I'd go with putting another 20k on it too.

Resale is based heavily on demand. Up here, you'd get MSRP on both ends for some reason.
