My guess is he was trying to hold/bully position and it got weird real quick.

"2000 base 5sp, 95,000 mi.

Removed the slave cilynder after finding a puddle of brake fluid under the car, dripping from the bellhousing.

Inspecting the part I found that the plastic tabs the cap / seal retainer (original Sachs part, all plastic) are broken and allow the piston and seal retainer to slide out of the cilynder.

This can happen if the clutch arm is cracked allowing the piston to overextend and break the retaining tabs, it was hard to disingage the clutch a few days before.

I've seen pictures of this here and on other forums, I am reluctant to ruin the new slave cyl. I bought.

What do the expert think about this?"
Got the Box' back on Friday.

The clutch arm was cracked as suspected. The mechanic kept all the worn parts as I asked him to do, he also replaced the two rear engine mounts.

$ 2,014.00.

It was a job I could not have done myself in the carport, It is the first time the car goes to the shop since we bought it from sister in law in 2004. I have been able to do other work myself, air oil separator and all maintenance.

Good to be driving the car to work again, the clutch by the same mechanic on the 318is a few years ago was $ 700 something.

My first P-car to go with a garage full of BMW's. I'll be driving it from WI to TN (~1000mi) after a ChumpCar race. If anyone sees a silver 928 on the side of the road between WI and TN October 21/22nd stop and say Hi.
Get the t belt done before you drive it to TN...

I would like to but with the time I have available it isn't going to happen. The "good" news is the 16v engine in the early ones isn't interference so a snapped belt won't mean a trashed engine.

I have a few friends that live along the route and another friend that will be making the same trip about 8 hours behind me so I should be able to make it home. Once home the car is parked until the belt is done.

Also have the option to leave it at my parents for a while and getting on my return flight instead. Depends a lot on how I feel after driving the car a bit.
