Advise me on E Readers ....

I have needed to do a lot of research lately, and one of the great resources I have been using is Google Books. The thing is, I hate reading the books on my laptop. So I am considering a E. Reader tablet of some kind. So what are your suggestions. It needs to have some ruggedness to it, it is being used in a shop environment. And must be able to be loaded with Google book PDF files.

Thanks in advance for your help !

AFAIK any Kindle will accept PDFs. I'm not sure that any of them are rugged. You'd have to buy a protective jacket. The screens aren't fragile, but I think they will scratch if you're not careful.

I have an older Kindle and I love it more than reading paper books. That e-ink thing is the bomb. I see no reason why you shouldn't buy the least expensive Kindle, if books are your priority.

buy a kindle.
pls correct me if i'm wrong.
but this is how I understand it.
you can download any eBooks on kindle
you cannot down load amazon books on to other brands of eBooks.
also when you buy a eBook take it out into the sun see how much it reflects back into your eyes.
most people read more when they are on vacation.
you are outside a lot reading.
I've upgraded to a kindle with the backlight.
works well.
before I needed a light to read it.
annoyed the boss/wife.
cheers

Nook HD+

It's the only one that accepts everyone's reader software as long as they have a version for android, and, the shopping is not restricted like with iPads.

Mine replaced my Sony Ereader, added my wifes kindle books, + google play books and the Nook Store. Use it with Calibre and every format of source material can be used.

Get a Kindle, not a tablet. Big difference as far as readability and eye strain.

A Kindle wants to see a .mobi file, not a PDF or an epub. Get a copy of Calibre for free and you can convert what ever you have into a Kindle-readable (.mobi) file.

I forgot, the best thing about the Nook is the carabiner hole. http://www.geek.com/tablets/hands-on...-plus-1518447/

If you're a geenuwine biker then you can have matching chains; one for your wallet and one for your Nook.

I had a Kindle for a couple of years. I came to disliked the Amazon ecosystem that came with the Kindle. The thing would turn on the Wi-fi on it's own to download the latest ads and offers.

I upgraded to a Nook HD when the price dropped recently.

The Nook is much easier on my eyes and displays magazines in color.

What ever you get, buy a cover for it and download Calibre to manage your e-books and such.

The nook screens are pretty much the best you'll find for reading, the HD+ in my opinion has one of the best screens period for quality if not resolution (though it is 1920x1200). The downside is in the battery life, the HD+ lasts a long time but the E-Ink ones will last for a crazy amount of time.

I will ask you tomorrow ! I have been seeing ads on TV this weekend and found it very interesting. It looks like it will work for what I need if I can load the old texts that I have on .Pdf files. The big advantage is that I do not need to carry around a 1807 page reference book that was printed in 1903. And that is just one of my books that I need for my work. They are all in the 1000 page range and over 100 years old. That will allow me to use my bike instead of a car or truck when I go out on the road.

You're right. I never actually tried it. I thought it wouldn't so I converted the file to a .mobi, but a quick reread of the manual says it should. Mine's an old Kindle keyboard.
