Wee and lovin it!

I've got a 650 and love it. I had an old KZ1000P for a few years until I could get what I wanted. I've been drooling over V's and Wees for about 7-8 yrs now. Couldn't decide which I wanted (truth is I'd have taken either and been happy). I was 6'3.5" and 320# and really wondered if the 650 would handle my size ok. Well, after a visit from the Big C, I'm now 6'3" and a little, 225# and have a 650. It has no trouble handling me and I've also had my 270# son on the back and it didn't seem to have any trouble handling both of us. So 320# it wouldn't have had any trouble with. I haven't found myself wanting for more power at any time and I do enjoy the increased fuel mileage of the Wee. I hear people talking about having to chage gears more often...the only time I have to downshift is when I'm slowing down. I ride in the mountains of SW VA every chance I get and I can accelerate pretty well in high gear from what...40 mph or so on? If I'm in a hurry to take off, I can drop a couple of gears and really get gone. I can cruise up and down I-40 from Raleigh to home at speeds that make me worry more about the police than the bike. I think the only thing the 1000 would do is get me in trouble for wheelying or some such. I'd probably enjoy the extra power of the V once in a while but I really don't need it. I'm having a ball with the Wee.

I'm new here...just bought a 2006 DL650. Now planning on making it perfect to me. Question is: Is anyone here currently using this set-up? http://www.mmotoparts.com/product/wh...-dl650-v-strom

Hi all. I'm considering a new V-Strom 650, but I refuse to call it a 'glee'- I hate that show!

Ya that name sucks, there's a guy over on stromtroopers that kinda came up with that and all the lemmings followed him.I would call it a 650 Vstrom..

Yeah I hate the nicknames for these bikes and have yet to hear any used in the real world. I just tell folks I have a DL650. That's what the model on the VIN sticker says anyway.

I looked around at that stromtroopers forum and it has a real cranky vibe to it from the overmoderation of that one old dude.

I think the vast majority of users there would disagree with you. That "one old dude" (Greywolf) is pretty highly respected in the Strom Wolrd and is trying to keep some order there by enforcing some of the rules. I don't agree with everything he does or says (I hate the name "Glee" for example) but I would say that overall he has done a pretty good job of moderating.

Moderating is a thankless job at best.

I'm not allowed to go to the Stromtrooper forum at work anymore.

My computer got a virus from there last week and it took the IT guy 1/2 a day to get my computer running right again.

I agree with your assessment on Greywolf and the forum Tom. I've been on adv a while, and enjoy it, but as a new Vstrom owner, I also am on stromtrooper quite often as well, as there's a wealth of bike specific knowledge there. People are quick to get way off in the weeds in forum threads (in general), and I feel the moderators do a good job there keeping things on topic. Sure, there are times that they seem a bit heavy handed, but so be it if the site works, and it does.

Grey wolf knows more about the strom then Suzuki does by far,BUT he has very little social skills and pisses off a lot of people. If he wasn't a moderator he might act different !!.

You think this forum is bad go over the FJRForum.com and ask a question. Try in on a Friday if you have real big brass nuts. This forum is a breath of fresh air compared to that one. There is so much in fighting over there it's fun just to ask a question to piss people off. Along with ADVRider this is one of the best forums on the net. I haven't ran into one person on here that was a pain to deal with. Greywolf has answered questions for me and with excellent remarks and knowledge. You know he is passionate about the Strom and he knows what he is talking about. The knowledge on this form is second to none.. Your mileage shouldn't vary..

I couldn't disagree more. The Stromtroopers are a friendly lot with very few exceptions, and "that one old dude" is an outstanding asset to the community. Yeah he can get a little abrupt occasionally but that's usually after someone has come in trolling and trying to make trouble. Even then he's pretty level headed about it.

Yeah I'm with D_A and V-Tom. Really good community over at Stromtroopers and Greywolf is an amazing asset.

I've put a few people on ignore here at ADVrider, but no-one over at Stromtroopers. YMMV

I guess I must've formed my opinion from an outlier thread where there were deleted posts and bannings going on and it was some introduction new owner thread. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers - was just sharing my first impression from a very short visit over there.

Anyway, I'm looking for some kind of back rest for my wife and am coming up short other than a true topbox with back pad. Is that really the only option for the 2012 650s? Is there any sort of soft tailbag that would do the job?

I just dropped $700 or so on new better riding gear for both of us so I'm not really looking to spend another $500+ for her to lean back just yet. She wants it NOW but I'm just trying to see if there are other options before getting the matching OEM Adventure top box with pad.

Thanks guys.

I'm in that same boat really, riding 2 up with my wife probably as much, if not more, than I ride my L3 (notice I didn't say glee...) alone. She loves it, but keeps asking when I'm going to get a backrest for her.

My dilemma is that I don't want to buy a tail box until I know which pannier setup I want, as there are quite a few options. I've been leaning towards the Givi Trekkers, and one thing that's nice about those is that both the 33L and 46L fit on the tail or side racks. I just don't know if I want something more sturdy though, like some solid aluminum panniers instead, and if so, I don't want a Trekker sitting up top.

For now I have some soft saddlebags, and a little soft tailbag that I've used on my WRR. Better than nothing for her, but not exactly something to relax back on.
