Well, as my Orthpod explained it to me:

everyone's injury is essentially unique, as is how they heal up.
The healed bone should actually be stronger than it was originally, but if it ever gets re-injured, the outcome may be worse than the original injury.
Added hardware can definitely complicate matters.

I shattered 6in or so of my tibia, got a full length knee to ankle rod and buncha screws.
I figure I won't ever really break my Tibia again...might bend it a bit...

seriously though, I expect that if I ever re-injure that leg significantly in the future, it will probably come off. When I shattered the tibia, the surgeon said it was about 50/50 I'd be able to keep it at the time.

As a member of the heavy metal club myself, with a tib/fib and ankle fracture, I found this thread to be useful:

Also this site was interesting and useful:

Hope you heal well! My injury was about 21 months ago. It's pretty much back to normal, but my ankle still does not have quite the full range that it used to have. I continue to do ankle flexibility exercises.

Thanks for the replies Shadow 9er and Eyes Shut. The links were also very informative, thanks for sharing them with me.

I was introduced to dual sport riding in 2009, went on my first adventure ride from Seattle to central Oregon in 2011, loved it, and really got into it this past year (I was away from home for about 6 months in 2012 due to work overseas). This injury messed with my head and reading other's similar experiences helped. I plan on taking a PSSOR class next spring to improve my dirt skills and boost my confidence.

Bluhduh T-boned = bones held together with Titanium????

Jeep pulled right to side of street....then suddenly U-turned left "to drop off my friend at her apartment".

Went thru driver's window at 40mph (that caught her attention). ACDF = titanium plates = 3yrs of GEICO claim development = near constant head/neck aches.

Is it worth it? Seriously...

Here's my addition. Broken collar bone from a deer attack - note that the bone is in pieces. You can also see my busted up ribs as well! Anyway, got back from the doc today, and all is healed up well. Watch out for Bambi, fellas.

Thought I'd bring this back to update my membership info after my latest mishap... I've already got a nail and 5 screws in my left tibia on a previous page, and after smacking a dip wrong on the 300 Easter weekend, I can add 1 plate and 7 screws to my right collarbone to the BOM to make a bionic Malhon...

Well I'm no longer a member of this club, got my stuff all pulled on March 6 And oh what a feeling, great to have my twelve screws and plate from Venezuela removed, those are 12 I could have easily done without
From this:

With a whole lot of waiting on this:

to get these

It looks like I'll be a lifetime member. I had my 12 month checkup in April and everything looks good. So unless there is a problem the titanium rod is staying in my tibia. Stronger then new the doctor said! lol

I got real serious with him and asked what if I had another accident and broke it again. Could he fix it? He looked me straight in the eye and say "yeah I can fix it". What a badass!!

Overconfidence did not help either.

mine are likely never coming out either. plate in my fibula and a long screw between the fibula and tibia.

doc said he would take them out if they bothered me, but, if they don't bother me, there's no real reason to, so why go the through the hassle and risk of surgery?

he said i might eventually break the screw that he put in connecting my tibia and fibula, but at this point, it doesn't matter. might even be better if it breaks so i get a little more range of motion back in my ankle. but, the last x-ray i had showed it still intact, and i pretty much have all my range of motion back anyway.

it's been about a year and a half since i had them put in, and i can't even tell they're there anymore.
