Electrical Gremlins

My '06 KLR with 16000 miles had a strange electrical occurrence last night.

I LOST:
headlight (both high and low beam)
taillight
dashlights

I HAVE:
blinkers
brake light
starts and runs fine

I have not had a chance to look at it yet and plan to Tuesday morning. A blown fuse seems unlikely given the unusual symptoms. Any thoughts?

Sure sounds like it might be a fuse.... Have you tried putting a brand spanking new one in?

This certainly throws a wrench into the mix....

They install gates like that so only experienced riders continue on that trail.

+ 1 on the replies quoted from above.

On a Generation 1, sometimes the HIGH/LOW BEAM switch intermittently contacts BOTH headlight bulb filaments at the same time, drawing enough current to blow the OEM 10-amp HEADLIGHT FUSE.

Recommendation: Replace with 15-amp fuse. Unlikely to blow, should both headlight filaments be activated simultaneously again.

Bingo!

You guys nailed it. Replaced the fuse with a 15 amp one this morning. Thanks for the links, you guys are great.

For what it's worth, I have a 15 amp fuse powering both the high and low beam, my high beam Dually LED's, and my fog light LED's. With all lights on high beam, that's not even 9 amps of current... Even when I flick high and low on at the same time via means of black magic (balancing the switch) with all LED's on I'm only at 12.5 amps...

Food for thought

My 09 has been sitting in my garage for six months while I was overseas for work. No trickle charger. All I did was dump some Stabil in the tank. 10 jabs of the starter later and she is up and running.

Did a short 50 mile ride. Didn't feel like a big, fat, underpowered single. It felt great riding the pig after such an absence. Looking forward to my Hippo Hands to arrive so I wont have cold hands anymore (I do have heated grips right now)

Engine failure on 2011

Unfortunately, something came loose inside the top end of my engine on the way to work the other day. I felt a weird sensation in the engine, then it lost power completely. At first I thought maybe a line came loose, but it also felt like the engine just wasn't there anymore. It did allow me to pull in the clutch and pull over gracefully without locking up and throwing me at 75 mph on the freeway.

I had it towed to a mechanic to open it up and give me an idea of what they think happened, but I already know there was metal loose where it shouldn't be inside the engine so it can't be good.

Some thoughts that went through my mind are KACR or some other internal part breaking. But what? I replaced the doo about 1,000 miles ago, and besides, this was the top end of the motor I'm fairly certain. Chain in the engine?

I think I'm SOL in terms of warranty. From what I've heard I doubt Kawasaki will do anything for me, but I'm pretty disappointed. Just 12,000 miles on the bike and hadn't even seen its first dirt road yet! It's been my commuter bike for the past couple of years.

If the engine's toast I figure I'll just bring it back home and use it to teach myself how to put it back together (probably with a bigger bore). Any other suggestions? Any other thoughts as to what this could be while I wait for the mechanic's estimate?

Thanks in advance for any help!
