KTM 990 Adv + KTM 250 XCF-w

I did a complete stable swap... sold the klr650 + r1100s + 2x xr-400s, got 2x ktm 990 adventures and a ktm 250 xcf-w (mine) and a crf-250 hers. I have 0 regrets ... The Honda she keeps trying to transform into a ktm:)

After a cross country tour this spring, I was sick of the oil burning to cruise at anything over 65 mph (with a 16 tooth) on my 2012. Traded it for a Ninja 300, sounds like an odd choice, but I have to say I'm loving it. I'm waiting for Kawi to FI the KLR or the KLX or build a 300 Versys. I miss the adv riding position and the option to go off-road. If I'm honest I wish I'd never sold my 87...it was well sorted and didn't burn oil on the interstate.

My 2006 KLR650 in the one year only proper Kawasaki lime green, was a great bike. It did everything, just didn't excel at one thing in perticular, which was fine. I didn't so much replace her, as she was taken from me by a tractor trailer on the Interstate. It took almost a year to get back to being able to ride like I did before and I eventually tracked down my XChallenge and LOVE it.

The KLR is a pig off road, no doubt. I rode a friends WR250R on some gnarly stuff around Hot Springs NC and fell in love.

The KLR has its place...and it isn't going ANYWHERE. I like its ability to run the roads long distance (back roads/limited access highways preferably, as I don't like having to run 80mph just to keep from getting run over) and play in the dirt when I get there. I love the long range capability of the bike & dependability of the bike. 44K+ miles without a hiccup. But it is a bear to pick up in the sand

I'll probably go after a DRZ400 for dirtier work. LOVE the WR250R, but it is only about 25 lbs lighter (317 vs 295 for the WR) than a DRZ & has a good bit more grunt. Now if only the DRZ was FI...

My XChallenge is FI, 55hp, and about 321lbs as she sits.

I didn't so much replace my 09 KLR as I expanded the stable.

For the OP, for highway work and heavy dual sport fun, I'd look at a twin. Either a KTm 950/990 or some BMW GS F650, F800, R1150...I picked up a R1150GS and it's MUCH more fun on the highway, I didn't realize how much more smoothe and relaxing it is to ride on the highway until I picked it up. Speaking of picking it up, this bike won't see much offroad use, its just too damn heavy. Now gravel roads and improved forest roads, you bet.r

But for more dirty work, I sure appreciate a lighter bike, and my WR250R is great. It rides the fwy almost as well as the KLR, but the KLR has better wind protection, highway bars, throttle lock and a little more passing power that is all handy.

If I had to pick just one bike, for me, right now, it'd be a KTM 690/950/990 or a GS800/1200.

Here is something I have always kind of wondered.

What was your riding experience before the KLR and what did you buy after the KLR?
