Tell me what I should know about a 2011 Patrol, prior to buying one.

It is Russian and will require frequent maintenance. Follow through with the frequent maintenance and you'll be a happy camper.

If it have extremely low miles, then there is a good chance that the PO didn't do that maintenance, parked it, and put it on the market after it sat for a while in the garage unmoved.

Mine is over 20,00km now and no major problems. I service at 2500k intervals as recommended. Battery still original and in good shape thanks to huge alternator output. You also have to like travel in the slow lane. I tend to run at 55-60 most of the time, although it will pull 65 on the highway without hurting itself (MPG suffers though). My dog loves the sidecar rides!

Check out sovietsteeds.com for lots of info on Urals.

The 2014's will have fuel injection and disc brakes all wheels. But big bucks.

If you feel like the PO is someone who looks after their machines, do some short rides around the neighborhood or around town to get used to handling dynamics, and how the machine behaves in general. These bikes have a personality and you should get to know it. Take an afternoon and inspect valves (adjust if needed) and head bolt torque. Then empty and replace all fluids (its easy, and then you will know for sure what's in there). Pull the spark plugs to make sure everything is happy in the mixture department. Check and familiarize yourself with tire pressure settings. Create an account on sovietsteeds.com. Book mark myural.com.
Shop for Russian farkles (ammo cans, jerry cans, shovels, machine gun mounts, etc.)
Make up excuses to ride the Ural rather than using the car.

If you have never driven a sidecar before, I would ask the owner to pilot you around while you sit in the sidecar for a quick spin.
This will give you a sense of the engine sounds and a sense of appropriate corner speeds before you take a turn at the controls.

Trans clunk into gear is normal but shouldn't grind. Flex disc should not be cracked or aged too bad on a 2011 but it is a wear item to go over.

Ask and note any work the PO had done.

There are lots of reasons people sell rigs but the number one is they want the money because they don't use it enough to justify the huge amount of space the rig takes up.

I sold my rig because my daughter is old enough for 2 wheels.

As far as checking head torque, NO ONE is going to do any torque check on the heads until they buy the rig. Zero need. You want to taste the fluids, go ahead.
As for taking a test ride, only in a pasture. Have seen to many OOPS !! by riders who think they have a handle on the ''sidecar thing''.

Have learned from other's genorosity.

Have no issuess w/ taking anyone interested in sidecars for a ride. Have taken many hours talking w/ owners & non riders about the pure fun of Urals.

Don't much care much for the ''upper management'' warranty is way to selective, here in the USA, but the rigs are sound & can be home fixed.

Don't trust Ural's expressed BS warranty.

I wonder if your comments come from first hand experience.
I had a starter sprague go bad on my 2011 two months after warranty expiration.
I called Jason at IMZ and asked for dealer price on a new starter. He would not do that, instead he covered full replacement under warranty-without my asking for it. I paid postage for the one I got and postage to return the old one-less than 30 bucks.
Search a bit on the Soviet Steeds forum and you'll find my experience was not unique.
Ural has the best warranty service of anything mechanical I have ever owned.

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe a little more info should have been added to the original post. I've been riding /driving sidecars since '82 ( over 150,000 miles). I was just curious about problems with 2011 Urals. There is one near me and I was just looking for things to check on when I go see it. Thanks to all. Jim

It will be like meeting an old friend then. 2007 was a big year for upgrades and they have been given improvements every year since then. Nothing of note on 11's that I have heard or read about, except maybe check the rims. IIRC: there was a batch of aluminum rims that got hairline fractures or cracked at the spoke nipples. Post pics if you get it.

The rim issue was/is for rims manufactuered in April 2012-only that month.
His soon to be owned 2011 has no problems.

#9 below is the most important improvement in the 2011 models. There were issues w the previous bolts backing out or breaking and the 2011 model seemed to fix that issue. Older models can be updated to the new bolts.

2011 Improvements:
1. New paint options including more powder coated colors
2. Aluminum rims on all models including sT
3. Duro tires standard on all models
4. Trunk locks on all models
5. New round indicator lamps (for alternator, turn, neutral, high beam)
6. New Cordura (canvas) tonneau covers and aprons
7. Gear-up now equipped with single seat and rear fender rack
8. New aluminum upper fork bolts
9. Improved high strength final drive ring gear bolts with loctite and elimination of locking tabs

well
i baught an Patrol 2007 last spring,
at first week i was not sure i made a right moove,it was scary to drive and i have 40 years of driving motorcyles but NO sidecar before.I add to reset myself and it too me 1.month at least.
i am doing my mecanic myself BUT an important thing is,remember your sidecar
must be WELL align with the bikes.
Engine is good,buy QUALITY oil,,,not recycle patato oil.

i love my Ural,it is not Jap BUT you will discover that you "are still smiling" with her.
