Yep, woke this morning to a nice and clear sunny sunset day, with the temp down to -36. I stepped out in my PJs just to see. Not too bad at all. Bummer is that I am going to have to bundle up just to walk across the road to check my mail, LOL

I am amazed at the beauty of winter!
Yes it's cold, too cold to breathe at times, but wow! Just amazing.

I live downstairs, you can see my kitchen window if you look closely

Today on my way to work, I pulled out of my garage and after closing the door jumped into my car as not to be late (again!)
But when I looked to the side I saw the most amazing sun rays coming from behind the tree, so I dashed out of the car and took some snapshots. This one came out the best.
Of course I was late again

Mithrandir has been doing great, but today after work it took a long time for him to start.
Tomorrow is payday and I will have to purchase an engine block heater. I had returned the other one as I needed it for food.
He has an oilpan heater and some folks say that's enough. I'm guessing not for my old car, unless something else is going on that I don't know about.

Yep, winter wonderland. I love winter in Alaska.

Hey, just throwing a blanket over your hood and windshield can help retain a bit of heat and make it so you don't have to scrape your windshield.

Have fun, Mark H.

cold start

well, you already heard from me about the synthetic oil.(or maybe you missed the message)
it really can help with these cold starts.
But, a cheap thing to exchange, since your car is probably old-style carburetor is your ignition cap (verdelerkap)
It's a 2 minute DIY thing for a few bucks, and can make a world of difference.
A few bucks more can get you new spark plugs, maybe just what you need to manage those freezing mornings a bit better.
Remember, these items don"t need to be fully broken and may unknowingly perform poorly still.
Stay warm!

Thanks Mark! So far I've been lucky, no scraping the windows because Mithrandir is in the garage at night. I have a small heater inside the car with a fan, when plugged in, it keeps the windows from icing over.
Hopefully Joanns won't look too closely as to what all I have plugged in, Battery blanket, trickle charger, block heater, inside heater , but it helped, started right up even with a broken choke!

Hey bro!
I got a great deal in this car! It came with a brand-new distributer cap, wiring and spark plugs! They are the only shiny new things under the hood
I will put synthetic in it as soon as I can afford an oil change. Might have to wait till next paycheck.
The battery blanket will hopefully help, at least until I find a used choke, the one in there now doesn't work.

I ran 5-30 semi synth in my older vehicles and it worked just as well as full syn in the cold. It is a bit cheaper.

Hey Jim, sure miss you too, and the open road!
I am loving the snow and its beauty though. Work is okay, but being on the road is infinitely better! If only I could make a living doing that! LOL. It does get tiring though, especially with all the engine trouble etc.
Hope you are doing well, and maybe we'll meet again next year some time

It has been snowing for a few days.
The snow here is like fairy dust, all glittery and light. You can blow it away with no effort.
It shimmers when the sun or any light shines on it. Very pretty.

amazing how much snow can accumulate on a few skinny branches and twigs

The sun hovers around the horizon all day before somewhat setting at night. So far the nights have not been dark at all, but rather reddish and orangish Still haven't seen the Northern lights, too cloudy

Trying to melt some snow so I'll have some water to do dishes

Yeah this was an odd thanksgiving, all of us in this little housing area were going to have a potluck, but upon awakening found out that we were sans water. Looks like the heated wrap around the hose into the underground water tank bit the dust, so of course the water froze in the line. It's 6 PM and I still haven't seen any water. The landlord showed up for an hour and showed me how he had pulled the waterline out of the wall and had it inside the house next to me to thaw out.
I have a feeling he was trying to get me to put it back in after it thawed out. This time I played ignorant though, I really wasn't in the mood for messing with the waterline today, especially as it was cold, and I have to work a long Black Friday shift tomorrow. I'm gonna get eaten alive by screaming costumers!!!!
