Got my oldwing ('77 GL1000) yesterday after months of beuracratic BS to get her registered. Bike is a little ratty, but all's there and she runs sweet. Going to turn this ride into a hooligan scoot.

I've been lurking on ADV for a long time, finally signed up.
This is my '06, picked it up in october with only 12,000 miles on it.
Sold an '00 FLHT to move up to the Wing. It's my first non-HD.
To say there's been no regrets would be a gross understatement

Love this bike.

I see you have the Windbender shield with the rake kit... It's the best shield I've had on any bike at any time. Congrats on the purty Wing.

You probably heard it before...but....if you don't know the age/mileage of the timing belts CHANGE THEM! I got my wing in Sept and put almost 1000 miles on it before the weather turned bad and I was holding my breath the whole time!....will get them changed before spring.

I've been wrenching on my 2012...Bazaaz fuel tuner install has been a nightmare to install, it's not their fault, it's just a typical custom part install, they can't know the location of every connector on every year made, but I sure did waste some serious time pulling the left radiator and fan to find that the left bank injector harness isn't where they said it was.

The three pin power connector doesn't exist behind the relay box on the 2012 either, but they called me back super fast about which wire to use for switched power, very cool of them, I was worried they might be closed for the holidays. Whew on that. I still have the right side to put back together before I can try the bike out, can't wait!!

While I had the air box out I installed a filter minder kit as I have no intention of checking the air filter on a regular basis, it's still clean with 36,000 miles on it.

They have this terrifying pink hose on the clean side of the air filter for some sort of remote air box drain, get a hole in it and your bike will be drinking unfiltered air.

So, I got rid of the pink hose and tapped in there for my filter minder port.

Decided to put the filter minder in the glove box for a nice clean install.

Now checking my air filter is as simple as opening the glove box and looking at the gauge.

I concur - the Windbender (w/ rake kit) is an amazing shield. I look 6 or 7" over the top, and no buffeting. It rocks.

Can you find what's wrong with this picture?

Can you guess who rides the Goldwing?

Hot GoldWing?

No, not stolen. Hot.
I am a snowbird. I left my '84 in my carport in Lake Havasu City. Put in premium, non ethanol fuel, Stabil, ran it a couple miles. Put on center stand. Covered with two covers, bungees to the max. Left it May 15, tried to start it 2 days ago.
Besides 115-120 degree temps, there must be some wicked wind here as every surface was coated with dust, even under the covers. Choke cable very stiff. After many tries, it turned over and ran, but would not run when I shifted into gear.

Ok, we knew this one needed carb work when I bought it 2 yrs ago ( poor mpg and not quite as fast as it ought a be....) So the carb kit is on the way.

My question is..... How to prevent this happening again next year? I don't have climate controlled garage.... I have bikes back in Montana, so don't want to haul it.
Any suggestions? How to leave a bike in the heat for 6-7 months and not ruin the carbs...?

You probably don't need premium for the wing and make sure that the stabil is for ethanol. Some folks like to use Sea Foam, add a half a can to a full tank and run some through the carbs before putting it away. If I was leaving mine set for quite a while I'd turn off the gas and and run the the gas out of the bowls before I put it away.

If the carbs are dry, they won't really be affected by heat or cold. What I used to do to winterize my '78 was to pour some Seafoam in the tank, go for a nice long ride, then turn off the petcock and run the carbs dry. I tried to keep the tank as empty as possible so I could get as much fresh gas in there come spring, but my tank was POR coated so I didn't have to worry about the tank rusting. If yours isn't coated, filling the tank to the top and adding some Stabil would help prevent rust in the tank.

My method for long term storage is to fill the tank with 100LL Avgas and run the engine for about 5 minutes so it has moved throughout the fuel system. Avgas will not loose octane or gum up like car gas. Works well on all engines that don't have catalytic converters.
