For the most part, all makes are pretty reliable, but it sucks when you are one of the victims. That happened to me with my KTM 990 SMR. Failed immobilizer bricked the bike. I got it running with a 2008 ECU but went through 6 months of frustration trying to get the bike repaired and back to stock. Whether is was dealer or KTM incompetence I will never know, but when the new part came in and the dealer STILL could not get the bike sorted I was done with that bike. Got a good trade for it for a KTM 500 EXC, which has no immobilizer and no coded key. So at this point I still have a deposit down for a 1290 but am seriously considering deferring a year and see if there are major issues that crop up with the 1290 and if I really still want one, since now I have two dual sport bikes!

Saw the 1290 at the NYC bike show today.

LOVED the KTM. I'm 6'1" and found the seating position to be PERFECT.

Everything about that bike elicited excitement.

I'll take one in black, please.

I absolutely hate the insectoid headlight (what's with the headlight assemblies on naked bikes these days???), but I love the rest of it. The styling looks like a lot more "cohesive" to me than the S1000R which looks a little haphazard.

Any info on how much that thing is going to cost in the US?

Just want to rub salt on my wounds... it's 21000 EUR in Finland.. you do the math to convert it to USD. I'm too poor to do that!
