Yup....it's always nice to find a kit. But most hand guard kits come with a variety of mounting options. 7/8" or 1 1/4" (fat bar) depending on the 'mount kit' that you order with the hand guards. The universal kits also come with inserts that pop inside these bar clamps to accommodate a variety of bar sizes. (They come with half circle pieces of aluminum that conform to the bar shape when clamped down) As far as fitting levers correctly. Most kits allow for various spacers to be inserted between the end of the grip and the hand guard thus making perfect space for the levers.

I have a set of Dirtbike Cykra's.....and used their 7/8" mount kit on a set of Renthal Road High Bars. You can see the bar end weight spacer between the grip and guard in the pic below.

Here's a picture of the inner mounts.

My point is.....the universal kits work fairly well.

Thanks Arctic! I have a set of old beat up Cycras, and was thinking about trying to make them work, but they aren't long enough to clear my controls, without substantial modification....that's why I was looking a kit more suited for the Strom. I just heard back from an online outfit that I emailed yesterday, and they are going to try to put something together for me. I'll touch base once I get it all squared away....thanks for all the advice guys!!

The way to do hand guards on a Strom is to have the Inner Mount attach to the Handle Bar (triple) Clamps...

I've seen this on Dirt Bikes and we need to find a system that works for the Strom... If anyone has successfully done this please post back...

On the 1K there is too much hardware on the bars to try and use the clamps that attach to the inner part of the Bar.

Holy crap! I thought I was doing pretty well with just under 17k since the end of May 2012. Hard to do much more while married with kids for me at least. That's some impressive mileage there. Keep it up!

your opinions please, On must any day I can be found riding my old KLR650. But have recently been eye balling a very nice V-Storm DL1000
on Greg's list. I am not very knowledgeably on this bike but would love to get something a little more road ready for longer trips.
The bike I am looking at is a 2002 in very nice to almost mint condition.
It has about 19K miles and a full set of OEM hard bags.
The asking price is 3700. Would this be a fair price? What are any drawback for this year? anything out side of normal I should look for or be aware of? Thanks in advance.

Low miles, good shape, aftermarket windshield, flush turn signals, interesting paint job, crash bars, full bags (and obviously the racks to carry them)...

I see nothing wrong.

$3700 is less than the price of most clean thumpers you could buy. You could spend double that amount on a different ADV "type" bike and not get one that clean with that equipment and low miles.

Do it.. do it before someone else does... If it needs a better Clutch or Power Commander and pipes it's still the best "value" deal you'll find.

In fact you can add just a few things to it and finish the dialing in and still be in it real cheap.. Which is the greatest asset of the V-Strom... Price and reliability..

Everything svs said is true.

But, you have to know this is the first model and it has different windscreen, and not painted frame and lower alternator output, and no light turn-off while starting the engine.

Intersting paint job. I like different colours combination for tank and side covers.

Yup. A friend of mine has the pre 2004 DL1000. He's super jealous that I can run the MadStad bracket for smoother airflow on my 2004 DL650.

$3700 is a decent price, not a steal. I'd offer the seller $3400 and meet in the middle. 'Custom' paint means the bike has been layed down....granted we all do that, but it still should effect it's resale value. Is it a solid bike? Sure. Is 19,000 miles low? Yes. But I would still get it for less.

I paid $3200 with full Givi's for my 20,000 mile 2004 DL650. My friend paid $3400 for his 2002 DL1000.

Sure, you see the older models (2002-2005) listed for $4500 or more, but they're not selling easily at that price.

Would the bike have been painted because it was in an accident or spill?

If its not a stretched Hayabusa with chrome accents.....then its been layed down. The word 'custom' in for-sale ads makes me laugh.

Thanks guys for the great info! I added some more pictures.
I was under the assumption that the paint was factory because
the bags where the same color. His add says OBO so I thing I can talk him down some. Please share if you guys can think of anything else.

Yup. Bet he'd take $3500. That would be a good deal.

At the end of the day....these are tough bikes that can easily do 100,000 miles with simple maintence.

I have an 05 weestrom, and it came with the stck screen as well as the oem larger one
I had massive wind disturbance so I got the madstat bracket
That helped a decent amt but I still had a lot of wind noise and buffeting
Changed mirrors for the aprilla ones, not much difference
The madstat helps with buffering but noise is bad, I've tried different helmets too
If I had a slightly taller screen I think I'd be ok
What would be a few inches taller and good for ramping wind over than the suzuki touring one?
