01-04-13 and some other things

Here we are in the very south of Texas, waiting for a new to me transmission. We arrived in the rain and for the next 2 days it rained and rained and rained. The poor soaked rig did not want to start, but with some draining she begrudging fired up.

History

We had spent 2 nights at Corpus Christi Lake and the weather was just beautiful.

and we had a fire

Now we end up in south TX with a bad transmission. Only minutes from the boarder!!! Not to sure if it is good or bad luck

After the rainy days it was time to find a cheaper place to stay, one with internet. Just a stones away from where we were there is a "Value Place" seems they specialize in long term residents , cheaply too. We have a room for a week now all we need is a transmission etc...

Well it arrived on Friday, i did not know this until Saturday. Damn

The fitting will be tomorrow, a full day is always better when working in a parking lot.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the willingness of the places we have stayed to let us do mechanical work on their properties. As long as you do it around the back of the building all has been good.

We have been trying not to ride anywhere, i would hate to destroy the broken transmission. But we have needed some things, TX is really not a walking state

Lucky for us the "hotel" room comes with a kitchenette, in reality it is just like camp cooking; one pot meals. Although the "hotel" supplies a kitchenette they don't supply and kitchen items....

It is nice to be able to do something thou.

green chicken curry

and a chilli but no pics...

Tomorrow the transmission. Monday some other little parts arrive and then we are off and running.

01-05-13 A new day a new transmission

Today was a good day. 9am Take the rig out to get all the fluids warmed up, then drain;

Coffee anyone?

Seems that we got some water in the final drive, it was very wet last week.

I found my lost 5th gear

We had a very well stocked parking space to work in

Out with the old

in with the new

Finished buttoning her up and a test ride later; All good. The transmission shifts so smoothly...

Cheers all

All in all 6 and 1/2 hours including the test ride / get beer ride. All in all a very good day. Taking Amie out for dinner, she work very hard today.

We have the hotel room till Wednesday, some smaller items are arriving Monday in the post. By the time we are out the rig will be all good to run, now all we have to do is avoid the rain....

great report so far

I am spending part of my Sunday reading your report. Great way to spend some time on below zero (F) day.
I was surprised to see a photo of my wife and I in the Airhead Tent on page 2.
Glad you got a replacement gearbox. I was following that on the airlist.

The airlist was a great help. Pleased to have an airhead along for the ride.

01-07-13 Mexico Eve

The time has come, we spent the last few days getting ready. This morning meet us with mixed emotions; excitement, apprehension and just a little O crap

The rig is working, witch in its self is a great achievement and now mostly packed. We are wanting to hit the boarder relativity early, that way we can make some very good headway...

Next post will be from south of the boarder!!!

Congratulations on the successful repair! Keeping my fingers crossed that this is the last breakdown you will have with this bike! Looking forward to your next posting.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there will be a carne asada shot coming up very soon.

I hope you are having a blast in Mexico.

I mentioned this when I met you, but you really should have Amie create her own ADV account. I like when she chimes in.

01-08-14 Episode V

Ha i finally get to do this....

We made it... Customs, immigration and vehicle import all went very smoothly, I would guess 45min at the most.

Our crossing into Mexico

I had not edited on the "new" laptop, it was a frustrating experience. Then i remembered that i forgot to shut off the gopro before turning the bike off. This can corrupt the video, a lesson learned / remembered.

any second thoughts?

The morning was damp but warm, we made it out of the hotel early and hit the boarder around 8am. It really was perfect timing. It is amazing how different things are

I know the pic does not really show it but you know you are not in Kansas any more.

The day warmed, almost hot is all the layers i was wearing.

Two gas stops, one check point, one military check and many "road works" later (holes so large they would eat the front wheel)

We road dirt / gravel with out even trying

We ended the day in Estacion Manuel. Cheep hotel, it has been an exhausting day. We are still working out where to go tomorrow.

Ahh but there is always time for some food, our first Mexican food

Damn good food. Tomorrow we continue onwards.

01-09-14 Today was a very good day.

Late last night, over a snack

Yep these came from the guy who only has a few words of Spanish, all were very nice about the whole thing...

A quick night pic looking towards the road from our hotel

The place must have been amazing in it's heyday.

we can up with a destination; Xilita. We are off to see Las Pozas

The ride was wonderful, a slightly coolish start ending in the mid 70s. Beautiful roads getting us in by 1pm, a really nice short ride. I have been scowling ADV to find places in Mexico to visit, Xilita and Las Pozas have been mentioned numerous times. How could so many be wrong? Well i will be a horses ass!!!

Just Beautiful!

Our accommodation comes from an ADV recommendation too, Hostal Del Cafe. Wonderful staff, beautiful place. A little more expensive than we had wanted but for the room money well spent. how we found our way is a funny story. Xilita being a mountain town has a serious lack of parking, as soon as we got in we started looking for somewhere to pullover and query the gps on where to go. Finally finding a place i check the gps for the Hostal name, it says 0km... That's odd, i look across the street; Ha there it is.... Serendipity or what?

From our room.

With accommodation under our belt we head out to see Las Pozas. I had seen pics of the grounds but nothing could prepare me for what i was about to see, climb and downright enjoy. The pics below dont do it justice and once again way too many to post. Link to the gallery is below.

https://picasaweb.google.com/1116562...eat=directlink

The two mistakes we made, not clearing space in the sidecar for helmets and wearing riding jackets. We were hot and carrying the extra weight of helmets was not great either. Any ho, we made our way around and saw so much, probably missing so much too. Hunger and heat got to us, off to find food.

We ditched the rig at the hotel and hoofed it. With directions in hand to the town square this should not be too hard at all, one wrong turn and a few different turns to sightseeing

we found ourselves a place to eat and drink. You know you have to see the food and drink pics now

Sooo, damn good...

and a view

Bellies full we waddle back to write and then plan for tomorrow, i have promised Amie we would head for a beach. Once we find it we shall stay for a week or so.

Other quick observations; VW bugs. Herbie is alive and well and living here in Mexico and the obvious, dogs. So many dogs, most don't look twice at the rig but there has been the occasional pooch who thinks its a great idea to chase us. HA they are not fast enough!
