You just scratched the surface of all the possible dual sport exploration opportunities of historic mining areas around Salmon, Idaho. A person could devote an entire summer there making day trips similar to the trip you took to the Ore Cash Mine. There are also good options for multiday trips to enjoy the more remote mining areas on the fringes of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.

Going underground at the old digs is pretty dangerous and not advisable. Many of the openings have been closed for good reasons.

The more significant old mines were patented and are now private land surrounded by National Forest or BLM managed public lands. Explorers should not be surprised to spend a long time search for an old mine and then finding No Trespassing signs when they get to the edge of the mining claim. In many cases collecting mining artifacts is either theft or a violation of the Antiquities Act.

Exploring the area is the most rewarding if you remember that the trip, rather than the mine, is the reward.

It's also good to remember that it's often a long ways from an ambulance.

Great photos. They make me want to go there.

Knew some of your family when I lived there. It's a good clan. They understand taking risks and dying in the mountains.
