Eventually I'd like to ferry up tomAK and ride back down. Had my KLR barely two months so.still getting used to it

Anchorage to Bellingham on the float

Is it better/quicker to ferry from Witthier or from Homer? Which port has more frequent departures?

Their website is confusing..

http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/doc/...3W14_XGTariffs.

Looking at this I am seeing 547$ for myself and 735$ for the bike one way. 1300$ is a lot of cash. Am I seeing this wrong?

Why dont they have motorcycle pricing? We dont take up as much room...

You don't say when you're wanting to travel. Here's a schedule for next June:
https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/res...n=Get+Schedule

It shows every two weeks the ferry sails from both Whittier and Homer.
Homer is actually before Whittier, so the fare would be higher and it would be another day and a half riding the ferry.

From what I can see it looks like you have the fare right.

Thank you for this. I am planning for june/july

So looks like 5 day 1300$ ride from Witthier to WA that you can only get on once every two weeks...

Back to the drawing board...

Yep, $1500 and 5 days on a boat. Not something I would think most ADV'ers would be interested in.

That's why I always encourage folks to instead think about the 2-day boat ride between Haines or Skagway, AK and Prince Rupert BC.

Man, looks like rates went up this year and no more round-trip discount.

Good luck and have fun, Mark H.

You may get better scheduling on your way south if you jump on a Canadian Ferry in Prince Rupert.

Alaska Marine Highway from wherever north and then you could stop for a day or so in other interesting coastal destinations in Alaska. They may be landlocked....doesn't mean nothing to see/no roads around places like Juneau or Ketchikan.

And then Prince Rupert to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and your choice of ferry to get off the BIG island. Off to Port Angeles or the Canadian mainland or the San Juan Islands or the Sunshine Coast or......Choices.

What ferry to travel from the Anchorage area to Prince Rupert? Once I am in prince Rupert I dont mind traveling down into BC to see the area west of the Canadian Rockies.

You'd have to ride across the gulf on one ferry to Juneau or Ketchikan, then get on another one to Prince Rupert.

Have you considered riding to Haines? You can catch the Prince Rupert ferry from there.

I dont want to do this. The main reason I am considering the ferry is to avoid riding back on the same road on my way back home from Prudhoe Bay.

Arriving from the east I would ride from the Banff area to Prudhoe Bay, then Ride back down to Anchorage, hop on a ferry to the Canadian/US west coast and ride back east(and south) on a different route than the one taken on the way west. If I ride back to Haines, that defeats the purpose and once in Haines I would probably ride down the West Coast of BC as I have never seen it.

I figured that might be what you were trying to do, travel a different route heading home.

Here's the SE ferry schedule:
https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/res...n=Get+Schedule

You can ride the cross gulf route to Juneau or Ketchikan, then spend one day in either port and catch the ferry to Prince Rupert the next day.

Look at the maps...you can't do that. I "ride" boats up & down that coast and believe me it can be quite a ride at times.

So, is the AK State Ferry the only option for guy and his 2 boys who'd like to take a ferry ride with their motorcycles for some camping and exploring?
We have to depart/return the Seattle/Bellingham area; the Seattle ferry rides are kinda short (just commuters, really), and at ~$1500 a head , that AK Ferry juice ain't worth the squeeze. Too bad, sounds unique.....

Any other ideas for a some fellas just looking for a little "Beginner ADV" 3-5 day trip that won't break the bank?

Sadly about 600$ more than I am willing to pay for, infrequent departures and seems a little slow.

Gonna have to keep the bike on the continent il looks like.

Guano, have you looked into going to Vancouver Island for a long weekend?
I think there is a WA state ferry that runs over there in the summer, as well as the BC ferries.

There is also the Black Ball ferry running from Port Angeles to Victoria:

Wink Ferry from WHITTIER to Bellingham

Right now there is allot of openings for reservations on the July 14 trip. Two things on my bucket list are; drive the Alaskan highway and hopefully Dalton highway depending weather; and see finally the inside passage. Rooms are also available too. If you know your dates it is the way to do it. Motorcycles they put sometimes into small spaces; bring 4 straps for tie down too! When I called for reservations.
