My Visit to DMV for Inspection

I went to one of the only two inspection DMVs here in CT, to get my 2012 WR450 inspected for

my street legal title. I downloaded the requirements beforehand , & with the

help of member Comp123, had my bike matching all the requirements. Went

relatively smooth, tho the inspector did try to tell me I needed a brakelight switch front

& rear. I showed him the rule states "a stop light", not front & rear. He checked H

& L beams, horn, signals. He never looked at my tires for DOT

markings, which they had. Which is surprising, because I have that

monster Teraflex tire on the rear, which screams out, "non DOT!", if you ask me,

lol. Now it's done, thankfully I didn't have to make changes & come back.

Now I'm ready for Pachaug, Thomaston, or .........hell, anywhere else in CT!

I went to Danbury when I moved in state last year for the inspection. I thought the inspector was actually pretty cooperative. Had 2 bikes tied down on a trailer, and he hopped on to inspect, didn't make me remove them. He was just checking VIN's, didn't look at anything else.

I do like the fact there are no annual bike inspections in CT, just the official one for bringing out of state bikes in.

Good luck with your bike!

sounds to me like you fellas might be onto something in CT. Everyone seems to want to go to Vermont. If CT is that easy we all might be changing our address to your house!!!

I went for the "Off Road into Street Legal" inspection, because my MSO said

Off road use only. They don't do these inspections in Danbury.

I think you got a "VIN Verification", which is standard fare for moving into CT,

with a previously registered "Motorcycle" from another state.

Congratulations on getting it through. Some inspectors are certainly more strict than others, but if you have met all the requirements, it shouldn't matter. Conversions are 100% doable to pretty much any bike, as long as you can show all the safety requirements are met (and blinkers aren't one of them). Hopefully one day, I'll get my chance to attempt the conversion on my CR500 that needs a rebuild at the moment. Brap on, maybe I'll see you out in the forest.

I just went to the Wethersfield DMV on Thursday to have my CRF250X inspected. My bike had a current title from NH which in theory only requires a VIN verification but the rules have now changed. If you go here http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=804&q=527244 you'll then see this "ANY dirt bike or motorcycle that closely resembles a dirt bike regardless of whether the manufacturer is listed on the CT manufacturer's list MUST be brought to the Wethersfield DMV for a courtesy inspection." So I used this checklist http://www.ct.gov/dmv/lib/dmv/modified_checklist.pdf to make my bike comply. When I went through they wanted me to know that I wasn't there JUST for a VIN check, I was there because it was "modified off road". Once I agreed to that they continued with the inspection. All they really checked was my brake lights, signal, mirror, VIN (barely) and DOT #'s on the tires. They also made me demonstrate that the brakes actually worked by pushing the bike and locking up the brakes. I also had to add a mud flap on the rear to meet the 14" to axle rule. They made a comment about liking that because it needed to be there. The mileage was extremely low for the year (551) so they knew that wasn't legit so they just put True Mileage Unknown (TMU) on the inspection sheet. All in all it was much easier than I anticipated it to be.

I downloaded the checklist, & had it meet all the requirements as well.

Goofy looking rear fender extension, zip tied an old chain guard on,

made sure the signals were the required distance apart, etc. As long as you

meet all the requirements, it should pass. I went to the Hamden DMV.

These two are the only ones in CT that can do this inspection.

Good job! It's actually not that hard if you just go down the list. They don't care if it's four stroke or two either.

Getting a Dakar kit knocks a bunch of stuff off the list in one shot.

My buddy plated a 2002 YZ250F. It was funny because we stuffed chor-boy copper padding in his exhaust to quiet it.. Sounded like a moped at idle! hahahaa. Had a battery controlling the lights. And for a speedometer he used an HTC phone with a speedo app mounted to the handlebars.

Another guy I know plated a KX450. hahaa.. I know a few CR250's and WR250's with plates as well. My KTM 200 has a plate too but that was because of the KTM loophole, didn't need an inspection.

If CT is anything like PA then the inspector was correct, you would need a switch on BOTH brakes as most motorcycles have independent brake systems and the stop lamp must illuminate when EITHER brake is activated to signal following traffic of the deceleration. The whole point of having it plated. Yes, the checklist says stop lamp, as it is a checklist, but I'd check your actual inspection code. PA's has it for motorcycles. I'm sure you don't care as it got through, and maybe CT is different, but for the point of accuracy for others, and for just the right way to do things, either brake lever or pedal should activate your brake lamp. If you were to be hit from behind on the street and the police checked the bike at a post crash inspection, you'd be in a bad spot. Especially civilly. Not trying to scare you with that, but as a certified collision re-constructionist in PA, I have ALWAYS checked both brakes for stop lamp activation during a post crash inspection. As I said, not trying to rain on your parade. It just surprised me a state as anal as CT in everything else, would be lenient on bikes. Congrats on getting a bike Yamaha NEEDS to make street legal from the factory on the road. You have a nice Yamaha blue stable! Ride safe.
