[QUOTE=Big Bamboo;23258353]Greg (Need for Speed) and I met up today and went over the Saddle and all the way up Mauna Loa as well as the sights along the way up the Hamakua Coast.

I appreciate the escort and company yesterday Tim, you really know how to ride that classic BMW at a entertaining pace

I had a blast and got to see some terrain that I might not have found on my own.

BTW, it's Gary

Aaauuuurrryyytttt!!! Gasser just sent out a teaser e-mail on the route, it's a Dual Sport Ride this time:

Aloha! everyday and extreme off road Dual Sport riders…

Rock Island Rider's Memorial Day weekend GPS Mauna Kea 400 up date; 1/23/14

Talking Dual Sport 400 Rally event story today with Wayne Blyth, the human walking computer that never crashes, to get some chompin' at the bit ride info, as he is the one compiling the routes, time and mileage for the GPS map for you adventurous riders to download. Wayne said the new Garmin 78 is the hot setup to use but cell phone units will work as well.

Ride team of two or more, only one GPS unit will be needed, if all in team have a GPS to navigate by, all the better.

Hilo will be the official start and finish both days for the two day event starting Memorial Day weekend Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th and on Sunday 25th will be an all day Benchracing BBQ Banquet, where we can all get together to laugh and benchrace our fun adventures, and watch your team's GoPro video's of the ride on a big screen….plan ahead for this as being one of the many cool highlights of this unprecedented 1st Annual Mauna Kea 400 GPS Dual Sport ride.

Keep in mind this two day GPS Rally circumventing the BIG Island and it's tributary roads will go from sea level to 13,000 ft elev. a few times? (tentative) riders will encounter every kind of weather and terrain the Big Island can/will throw at you.

This is not an easy piece of cake Rally ride as you may think, sitting there on the couch, arm curling long necks, with you hand deep in the Maui potato chip bag.

I recommend you riders laying out a simple GPS ride in your area so you can team practice now! getting familiar with your GPS for quick glances to stay on track…think Dakar Rally road map reading skills.

Be back pack riding gear ready for; hot/cold weather, rain, fog, dust, mud, lava rocks, and snow? again, this is not a "hum a tune pick your nose" Rally.

The Vist Cruise holo holo Tarmac only riders will need a hardened lava butt and riding hand callouses to complete the 400 miles for braggin' rights.

Could be me - I'm on a GS Adv. 2010 with ~ 50K island miles. I regularly frequent the Saddle since I do a lot of work up top. I use that as an excuse to ride the bike from where I live in Hamakua to Hale Pohaku/Mauna Kea. I think I saw you a few days ago when I peeled off onto the old Saddle going toward Waimea.

Love the old Saddle, especially these days when most of the civilians are on the new bypass. Major hazards there these days are the freak'in turkeys and pheasants. Suckers camp out in the road. I keep seeing a couple of Pueo's just Waimea side of Waikii. Cool stuff.

Yep, some of the best twisties on the island, and I've seen those same two owls more than once!

My other fun ride, yes the old road through the green pastured Ranch area is near void of vehicles now, I’ve ridden it several times with zero traffic...think Isle of Man.

The bullet proof 08 CBR 1000RR is @ 80k mi...40 of it’s on Saddle Rd and I’d say 1k worth of going up to the Onizuka Visitors Center for a cup of coffee every ride over the years...think Isle of Man coffee break in the middle of a Big Island 250 hot lap.

That bike looks familiar too! I think I saw you about 1/2 way up Mauna Loa one time? The new Saddle Road is my Autobahn, the pavement is just sooo good compared to any of the other roads on the island... The Kohala mountain road is my IOM circuit. There's more; trees! rock wall! stone building! bridge! (and repeat) for the full effect...

Cool2

Alright, I am back home and already missing the island - going to have to come back again for sure.

Here are some pics from my last week of riding all over, put approximately 1,000 miles on Jasons bikes

Epic riding trip, but there are many more places I need to explore...

I'm partial to this one with the DRZ in the foreground, glad you had a great time, this is an awesome Island!!!

Damm, I have less than 1K Miles on my '11 200 and I ride every Sunday, though the 22 month trip to Europe did dampen that a bit....

Next time let's do some trails!!!!
