I'm ready for some "Big Sky" too. I should be able to wander my way there!

Did I read that right? You're leaving from Troy Idaho?

How far north? Glacier Park?

If so, I'm in.

Troy, Montana and right now Glacier is a strong possibility. Its how you get there that counts.

Didn't know of any dirt tracks through the park....this should be interesting.

Troy MT makes more sense. I live 10 mi from Troy ID and there is nothing there.

For Wallowa...I can give you a dirt route from Troy ID to Troy MT. Maybe we could ride up there together.
If Glacier is a possibility I'll have another rider and maybe two. I need a Polebridge fix.

Which bike makes more sense for the 2014 route?

Plated KTM 450EXC or F800GS?

Thanks!

kinda early in the routing stage, but given the choice I say the F800GS.

Dirt road in GNP

Actually there is a great dirt road through part of Glacier. The North Fork Road from Kintla Lake to Fish Creek is unpaved and a great ride. The North Fork Road on the west side of the North Fork Flathead River (outside the park) is occasionally paved; inside the park on the east side of the river the road is unpaved. It looks like there are a couple routes from Eureka or Hwy 93 across the Whitefish Range to the North Fork Road. Even if it is paved, the Going to the Sun Road is still worth doing. From East Glacier dirt roads head south along the Rocky Mountain Front.

maybe, just maybe, i should get involved in this ride. I've been looking into central Montana quite a bit. Kings Hill, Lewistown and such. 3/4lb burgers in Utica are Killer!

I Don't know what you guys are thinking of for this year, that north south road on the west side of Glacier is dirt. so that is a good option. and from there let me know and I will help where I can.

A ferry crossing on the Missouri would be fun to include if the route takes the group that far east, those crossings are downstream from greatfalls, and there are a few of them.....just a thought

OK, you got me. Virtually everything you mentioned has been in the planning hopper. The trouble I've run into is the distances involved. To run everything Timmer and I have discussed would take over 1,700 miles and well over our self allotted 7-8 days.

I worked out of Lewistown for several years back in the mid 70s. Yes, there is some interesting back road potential. I've put together some routes which include virtually everything you mention (ferries, breaks, Judiths, Snowys, Castles, Little Belts, and even Utica. But, right now I'm sidelining that region due to the distances involved AND also due to the weather at the end of July. It can be miserable hot and there ain't much shade.
