Thanks Emmbeedee - actually I had tried that as well though I believe it only gives access to the sd card. I've either got another issue with the mini USB port or the cable.

I wrote down the most important waypoints by hand and I guess I'll just lose the tracts.

Doing one last email check to see if the Garmin techs got back to me and then I'm doing the master reboot.
(Garmin did but it was got the sake of letting me know they value their customers, have unusual volume and will be getting back shortly!)

You might want to try Mapsource. It has a search for device feature. When the system finds it, it is going to want to find and install the driver.

This has happened automatically on my computers, but you might want to troll around the Garmin site and look for a 60 driver.

Mapsource will see the unit even if it is not in Mass Storage mode. (And may not see it if it is in Mass storage mode.)

The operating system will only see it as a disc if is in mass storage mode.

The same USB port works fine for my thumbdrive.
With the Garmin plugged in, it shows it is running on plugged power but basecamp can't find it, nor can the computer.

Could my wussy Thai USB to mini USB cable work in such a way it is able to power the unit without batteries but still not be able to send/receive from the computer?
You need the 60zzz driver from the Garmin site installed on the computer whether you're using Basecamp or Mapsource.
On the Garmin site go to the 60csx product page and look around there.

Hey guys - thanks a bunch for all the advice!
As it turns out out didn't really matter. After doing both the master reset as well as auto locate (pressing down zoom out and power at the same time) it still not getting a signal.

Anyone know if OSMand+ can mark way points and make tracks? I've got it on my phone but am not very familiar with it.

No idea about OSMAnd but what about trying to find an external antenna for the 60? When my wife's Montana quit connecting to SATs, we stuck an external antenna on it and it worked perfectly.

I think he did that already and is just trying to make it easier to load the waypoints back into the 60 or into another device rather than having to manually enter each one.
I just had to manually "transfer" all my contacts from an antique cell phone (no way to hook it up to a computer) to my new smarter-than-me phone. Not fun.

Believe me I've got plenty of local "I told you so" guys!
They're mostly criticizing the atrophy in my brain as I can't figure out how to get from my hammock to the river without a GPS! Really! I USED to be fairly good at NOT getting lost on jungle treks.

I feel like the idiot in the Avengers movie who can't figure out how to get the ship over water because all the navigation equipment got taken out.
Samuel Morrison screams at him,
"Is the sun rising?"
"Yes"
"Well then put it on the left!!"

yes and yes. you can pick points on a map, and add them as favorites also.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kc8qz33bvX0

track making is trivial, there is even different profiles, so you can set "car / motorcycle / bike/ walking" and your routing preferences will be used for each one.

download VECTOR MAPS of your planned regions for small file sizes and faster rendering on the fly.

you can even pass waypoints into a route, to change its shape and destination /order.

if you have saved tracks /gpx you can use them in the navigation dialogue to navigate along those old routes too.

give Osmand a solid day of use, and you'll find its very very good.

if you weren't in a jungle with only a very short introduction time , I'd suggest oruxmaps +brouter... but its too much for you to setup or understand in 20 minutes really. Osmand is where its at.
