Yes they did say that about the piston.
Think he checked most or all those things you listed
But, the bike sat on the showroom floor for several months and I was wondering about the battery starting to fail, myself
You say OEM are known to fail. What would you suggest for next battery? I am not concerned about saving weight. Just want a reliable long lasting battery.

About two years back I got a Deka brand battery from these guys:

$80 bucks and free shipping within USA.

They are a small reseller/retailer with great service & prices.
The Deka is mfg. in USA and seems a very high quality unit.
I bought it on Joel Wiseman's recommendation as the best of the "regular" AGM batteries.

It's been a fine performer so far.

I was not ready to make the jump to the exotic stuff.
