If one knows how to properly use the torque band of a diesel, then yes: a manual can beat an automatic. If you still want to text and drive though... get the automatic

Until it's time to sell it.....

The funny thing is, this engine barely needs a transmission! I think it's turning around 2,000 rpms on the highway and has so much torque it hardly ever downshifts. I'd think a 2 speed automatic would work almost as well!.

There is a five-door hatch made in Australia and in 2012 GM introduced a station wagon in Europe, available with both 1.7 and 2.0 diesels. But do we get the wagon? Non.

At the NY Auto Show, all 12 Diesel Driver magazine readers voted the Cruze TD Diesel of the year. The Jetta TDI was second, BMW X5 third.

Yup. I would love a 6sp in my VW Golf, but the 5sp is okay. Might move to a shorter 5th gear at some point...

Subaru was beat up for making an automatic WRX for 2015: they have been manual-only for some time. Subaru claims to have one of the highest rates of manual transmissions purchased of any brand in the US but have not chosen to import their boxer diesel.

They posted a slide showing the percentage of enthusiast cars purchased in the US with automatic transmissions.

BMW 3 Series - 90%
Camaro - 80%
Mustang - 67%
GTI - 60%
Corvette - 58%
Miata - 52%
Fiat 500 - 50%
Subaru BRZ - 30%

They are sold everywhere else, but with US emissions control at least, the cost of certifying another drive train is substantially limiting choices. It is a common lament on Cruzetalk.

Haven't heard anything about the wagon model in NA, but that's what we would buy if available.

Edmunds has the "True Cost of Ownership" data for the Cruze Diesel now.

True Cost To Own* $41,983
Total Cash Price $26,488

* Based on a 5-year estimate with 15,000 miles driven per year.

That's more than the 2LT by over $3,000. But we drive about double that mileage per year, and we also paid $2,000 less for the two cars, with navigation and backup camera.

The comparable Jetta Diesel.

It's interesting (but not surprising) to see where the numbers differ between the two: Jetta has better resale but higher maintenance and repairs. Though, in the end, the difference is roughly $2200 over five years, with the Jetta being the more expensive to own. Of course, these numbers may vary slightly per region since you have to put your zip code in...

Like you, I haven't seen any Cruze diesels on the road, but I am seeing more and more M-B, BMW, and Porsche diesels.

EDIT: Just for grins, I threw the Passat TDI into the mix (DSG w/sunroof, roughly the equivalent trim), and it's another $3k higher over 5 years, but all due to depreciation and higher taxes and insurance. Maintenance was ~$900 less than the Jetta.

One of the problems with the Cruze TD is that the badging is so discrete: a single green wave with "2.0 TD" on it. It's about 3/4" high and 1.5" long.

By contrast, the Holden CTD has "Diesel" badges on each front door as well as the rear trunk lid. So we bought some badges on eBay and we're representin'.

HPFP failures in the Jettas are about a grand more expensive than the smaller turbo's blowing up in the Passats
