Crystal Crane/Steens Trip September 13-15

blume and I were talking about this. Camp at Crystal Crane Saturday and Sunday nights, do the Fields/eastern Steens loop on Sunday and go home on Monday. Should be perfect weather, no mosquitoes and nobody out there.

Is a great spot with fire pits for camping.

If I didn't already have Nestucca plans, I'd join you. A bunch of homeboys will be sailing on the Alvord that weekend.

I just got back from Crane. I spent last night at Crane Crystal Hot Springs. A great place to camp. The pond was nice and warm, clean showers, and friendly folks.

I did a loop from PDX to Summer Lake Hot Springs, camped there, and took 140 over to Denio (no gas), and up through Fields (gas), French Glen and over to Crane. The Crane store also has gas. Also, Maple Valley, at the junction of 31 and 395 north has gas. I spoke with the owner who is mc friendly, and is open 8 am to 8 pm daily, 7 days a week.

Have fun, absolutely beautiful. Also, very cold this morning, bring some warm clothes. I left Crane this morning and made it to PDX in good time and glad I brought some warm clothes.

How was camping at Summer Lake? Is there firewood available for purchase at CCHS or in Crane? Does Crane have a cafe?

I love Oregon.

Crane has gas, a cafe, bar and simple groceries. Their food is not bad and the help is worth supporting with your business. They sell FW at Crystal Crane Hot Springs, but the prices are high, but then again, there isn't a tree within 20 miles of that place. They have some nice public space you can use also.

Oh and they have the BEST HOT SPRINGS ever!

They also have cabins for rent. You hear that Mortimer.

Have been there before Scott and agree about best hot springs ever. So peaceful. blume's taking the Sprinter with his and NoPo's bikes in it so I will throw a bunch of firewood in beforehand.

I love Oregon more than anyone can imagine after living here 31 years..

Sounds good, maybe I can talk the gal into a tow/ride!? Yeah, cold there in the morning! Write your name in the frost on your seat!

Anyways, even if I can't show, have a swell time!

Camping a Summer Lake was good. They have minimal firewood available. I ate at the Crane Care/Store, the Buffalo Burger was excellent. Camping was also good at Crane Hot Springs. Had Camp site #8 which had a picnic table and a good location. like I said, very cold in the morning. Have fun and be safe out there. I love that area!

Look around when you are down there. You just might see a dark green Jeep dragging an Expedition Trailer. Sorta looks like an upscale version of Jed Clampett's truck. If you look in the right spot we'll be there.

Here is the information we were given at the BLM office in Hines regarding riding in the Steen's area as of two days ago.
If you are off pavement you are supposed to have a shovel and either a fire extinguisher or a gallon of water on your bike.
Any road that has (ANY) vegetation growing in the center between the two tire tracks is a (CLOSED) road. That makes it pretty simple, almost every thing is closed.
The Steen's loop was awesome.
enjoy
