As requested - one Survival Knife thread.

Direct your Survival knife thread posts here.

Here is one I just got from Amazon for $36:

I played with it for about 10 minutes, managed to chip it several places by missing and hitting some rocks.

It did cut that maple sapling pretty readily. It worked on some brambles, but was a bit short and heavy for that job, a machete being faster and longer probably being better for that job. It might be a decent compromise knife for hacking through brambles while also chopping saplings and that kind if thing. I will have to carry it around and see.

Generally I don't carry knives for such tasks. I have a Gerber brush trimmer:

And I have a weed whacker thing:

But those are not knives and certainly not survival knives.

For $36 I thought I would give the Kabar kukri a try.

The handle is grippy enough - so far. We'll see.

Depends a bit on what I'm doing.

Most of my time in the bush is doing fieldwork in truly isolated areas in Africa (I'm probably going to DRC in March for 9 months of surveys) where I can be confronted by everything from a broken trail camera to a lion.

My EDC is currently a SAK forester (bought for a couple of bucks 2nd hand), before that a SAK older dutch army model or spyderco Endura 4.

    In European bush settings:
Enzo Trapper D2, full flat grind, firesteel in the sheath.
Leatherman charge Ti in my pack (with an additional firesteel in the sheath)
    Maybe a small axe.

    African bush:
My big blade choice depends a bit on what I expect to encounter:
-Lots of grass/thin stuff: slightly cut down tramontina cane knife
-Heavier chopping: Valiant survival golok M or martindale golok, sometimes a himpare (brushhook with long handle)
Always with a SAK in pocket and Leatherman in pack.

If I'm walking an established transect or for really quick sojourns, I might ditch the big blade and carry a locally made knife, about a 10" blade, still good enough for light chopping.

Not my own, I have an older model (different hinge pin) but it's a great knife for the rougher work such as battoning. Sits in a nice nylon sheath on my belt whenever I go outdoors. Otherwise, I EDC an opinel #8.

The inexpensive type of knife you have pictured. Separate blade and hollow handle fastened together, rather than 1 piece construction. I think Harbor Freight sells something similar.

Yeah, I have one of those two piece hollow-handled knifes. Seems to hold up OK though.

A friend and I purchased a set of those from the military surplus/salvage yard when we were about ten. Immediately pulled everything out and gave it a try. Saws snapped within a minute of work, matches lit, and we had no luck fishing. It did teach me the value of quality products though, so five bucks well spent.

Cold Steel Kukri, the $35. version is tough, durable, takes a nice edge and it's useful for a wide variety of tasks.
