Elite up and running

Finaly got my basket case '87 Honda Elite 150 up and running. New tires, and I found that hooking up the alternator makes a hell of a difference. Also venting the air out of the coolant system, borderline overheat unit that got done. Body is cracked and ugly. Seems to run very well, up to about 50 mph.
Got to ride it about 50 miles this weekend. Even drove it off road, where it hauled my large ass up a good size hill without a problem.

I love to see people laughing at my scooter! Little kids and old folks laugh and point. I think I'll keep this one.

The pristine '93 Helix 250 is probably going to have to go for whatever my next project is. CT 110?

Here's some helpful hints from my Elite 150 experience.

If you have any other driveability issues, don't forget to check the intake manifold. The carburetor just HANGS off of it without any other support. Cracking in that is real common and can lead to a lean fuel-air mixture. Had to replace mine. If you have any idling issues, check the autochoke wiring. I wire-brushed, then resprayed the entire exhaust system in black hi-temp spray paint. About 200 miles later, two of the three mounting bolts had disappeared. It was hanging off of one mounting bolt and the two exhaust manifold studs. So exhaust was leaking at the header and making it backfire. Do not reuse the washer-like exhaust gasket-trust me it won't work. Also, when you remount the bolts, use a split washer with them. Mine's on REAL good now.

It's a great feeling to get them to run again, isn't it?

Hey Brockster, is the manifold issue possibly the same situation on the little Elite 80? A friend of mine just had his carb cleaned and tuned up by the dealer and now describes something that sounds to me like an air leak.

I have never seen an 80 without the body work on it so unfortunately I have no relevant experience.

Here is a pic of the engine. The carb airbox is circled. The whole shootin' match looks like it is laid out quite a bit different than the 150.

I think what I'll end up doing is getting the thing over to my house and just fiddling with it.

Elite dead now...
Hit 60 on the interstate. Parked for an hour. Was only able to get up to 25 on way home. Killed the centrifugal clutch springs while troubleshooting...(note to self, never run engine with the cent. clutch uncaged, the springs can get sprung)

Think the weightss in the varator thingymajigs are stuck

Back to the perverbial drawing board.
