Hi 4Skins detail maps must be available as i used one for search and rescue in the Kaimanawas which had good track details and topography.

Hey Burnie,
How easy are the smaller screens to read while on the move & with the light on them. The reason I ask this is because my Magellan colour is almost impossible to read with direct sunlight on it.

The Garmin GPSmap 60C/76C/x and the Magellan eXplorist 500/600/XL are true sunlight readable screens.

Nothing like the Meridian color that washes out in bright sunlight.

The set which I use is made by a guy called KiwiLegend - see http://www.savefile.com/projects.php?pid=994333 for more info. I recently used these for tramping and MTB.

I'm lurking here at the moment and sitting on the fence with my next gadget purchase.
I'm still unsure whether to go for the new Magellan XL, or the Garmin 276c.

Good resource for doing research prior to purchase.
If anyone's interested, or budget-restricted, I have an as-new Magellan Meridian Gold available for a negotiable price; which includes the data cable.
The Magellan Gold was a mistakenly-impulse-bought-purchase; it is the Australian basemap version. Considering the newer versions available, I'm very flexibile on pricing.
On the bike I have been using the Garmin etrex for many years, in my riding jakcet's clear plastic sleeve pocket, theese earlier ones weren't too good on motorcycles. Since the technology has caught up somewhat, I'm looking to add/upgrade, and am trying to determine the best choice.
I like the idea of replaceable AA batteries in the Magellan XL; you just never know if/when you're going to get stuck.

I'm too looking to upgrade the gps and the 60CX is at the top of the list, would appreciate any feedback from those that know.

Up till a couple weeks ago I navigated with a 60C on my GS.

My last big trip had me using it all the way to, around, back from Norway. Using it exclusively to do the navigating...

Not enough map space, so the 60CX will solve that problem.

For duelsport (small so less likely to get wrecked in an off), and use as a hiking/walking in town GPS for when not riding, it's perfect really...

One missing thing, which can be a biggish deal, is the lack of audio notification of upcoming turn, at higher speeds... it only has a tiny speaker, which you can't hear while riding...

I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend one though.. make sure you get a power cable, those AA's may be great for off the bike use, but they will cause the thing to switch off sooner rather than later with the vibz of riding... (Don't need to remove the batteries, just plug the GPS in when on the bike)

There are lots of advantages with going with a 'bigger' automotive oriented GPS too, but you can search around recent threads to see a discussion on that...

So, I still haven't bought one and this new Zumo has just hit the market. Sounds like the 'bees knees' to me, what d'ya reckon? Worth the $NZ1800 odd?

I'm going to Europe soon and want to use it to find my way around Ireland and yje IOM too.

I bought the Zumo with NZ City Navigator and have been reasonably impressed by the amount of detail on the maps even for Hawkes Bay - most secondary roads are visible on it. Works very well with bluetooth too. I do a lot of riding on gravel roads and all are listed in this area which surprised me.
