276C modification.

I don't know if anyones tried this before but I found a great way of lightening up my 276C.

I have a 276C that I use on a combination of Touratech and Ram mounts.
For the past couple of months, the battery has been dead. No charge, nothing.

I called Garmin up the other day and they sent me a new battery and power cord. (Free, overnite to Mexico on an out of warranty unit! Garmin Rocks!)

Anyway, with the new battery in hand, I got to thinking about what to do with the old one.

I carefully split the case apart and took the cells out prior to sending them to the recycling center.

Since I have power cords and mounting bases on both my main rides, I really do not need the extra weight of the battery when I ride. I put the battery in my tank or saddle bag to have it available if I need it.

I realize it is a small weight reduction, but every ounce helps.

Ride Safe,
Vettster

So unless you have the unit connected direct to the bike battery, you power it off evey time you shut the bike off, and certainly every time you take the unit off the mount (meals/o-nites, etc.).

What are the consequences? Does it re-start your trip data/write over your active tracks etc.?? I don't have a 276C, so I'm curious.

My 276C is powered by a "Hot All the Time" wire from my bike-----and I run it without a battery a lot------heck the battery weighs as much as the GPS.

The only downside is sometimes when you hit the starter button the voltage will drop enough to turn the GPS off-----it will take off where it left off after a restart tho.

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

if you carry the battery with you . . . where is the weight reduction? just
on the mount?

Exactly. I'd rather cart the extra weight in my tank bag than hanging on the handlebars.
